Questions from new member

Hello all, I just bought my 86 C-10 last week and it's an awesome truck in my opinion. I do have some questions though since I've never owned one of these before.
First off, my experience with TH350 is limited, and the speedometer is way off. I need to change the speedo gear out, do I also have to work inside the tranny? The truck has 3:73's with a 28 inch tire.
I'm also looking to put the truck on a diet, it currently has a rollpan but I'd like to really lighten it up if possible without going majorly overboard with expensive parts. Some would be ok though, like a lighter hood, suspention, etc... any suggestions?
This truck will see frequent trips to the dragstrip.
Also should I look into a fuel cell? The origional tanks been patched and the gas guage doesn't work either.
Thanks in advance for any help! Oh yea, where's the best place to get aftermarket parts for these trucks?

hmm don't get me lying on any of the technical stuff but when it comes to aftermarket parts, check out these places:
LMC Truck: my personal fav. www.lmctruck.com
Classic Industries (i think its this) www.classicindustries.com
there's a billion more that everyone is gonna post, so i bet you won't have trouble finding anything as these trucks are very common (especially in the south as you and i are)

My truck is basically the way it came from the factory, and it weighs 3650lbs with a full tank of gas. Only things I've removed are:
Tailgate, Rear Bumper & brackets (It was the BIG step bumper). I figger a fuel cell, and MAYBE a glass hood oughta bring it down to around 3500lbs.

pull the inner fenders too, and if you don't mind to much, the ac system as well. also that bench is heavy around 100 pounds or so, might want to get a set of lightweight seats. just my .02

Thanks guys, those sound like great suggestions. I guess I need to find a weight scale around here. I thought my truck was about 3900 lbs or so but maybe its less than I thought.
How heavy is the stock 16 gal fuel tank? I'm really considering a fuel cell.
My truck does have working A/C and I don't mind having that extra weight for now.
My other concern now is the darn speedometer. Reads about 95mph when I'm going 65 (@ 3300 RPM's)

fixed it for ya!

leave the rear of th e truck alone! as it sits, its light in the rear, removing weight just as Tim did with his truck will put you even farther away from the traction that you're really looking for. you want a diet? ditch the ac, glass hood, remove the inner fenders, and put everything aluminum you can on your engine (heads, valve covers, intake, water pump, etc) then remove the stock fuel tank and place a fuel cell as far back in the bed as you can. then you will have taken a step in the RIGHT direction.

mine has a glass hood and aftermarket fenders. With a small sub box 1 full tank of gas and 1 1/4 tank and full nitrous bottle and me (189 lbs) weighed in at 4075 lbs.

it appears summit racing is kinda like JEGS, just a bunch of racing parts (nothing wrong with that). Am i correct in this assumption? or do they have a wide selection of things like seatbelts, interior pieces, etc?

Yea, they have performance stuff mostly I think like Jegs. I just ordered a catolog from them yesterday.
I got the exhaust finished on my truck today. It had dumps before the axle. Now it has an H-pipe and goes over the axle and dumps right before the rollpan. (w/ flowmasters) This thing sounds much better!

For speedo help, go to www.novaresource.org/speedo.htm & www.novaresource.org/speedo2.htm

If you need speedo gears, try the Chevy place, or http://tciauto.com/tech_info/speedo_gears.htm
