Tightening up a 3 on the Tree
Hi guys,
I'm trying to tighten up the shift linkage on my '69 C-20 with 3 on the tree. I've replaced the shift linkage bushings and adjusted the linkage, and that made a huge difference. The remainder of the slop is coming from the collar on the column that the shifter connects to (outlined in green in the attached pic). The collar itself wobbles up and down as well as axially a fair bit. I've looked high and low for diagrams on how to rebuild that section and for parts with no luck. Has anyone fixed this successfully? If so, where did you get the parts and the diagram to know what to order and replace? I can't believe this is so hard to track down given the number of these that were sold. I'm finding a ton of stuff on the automatics and the floor shifters - but not one diagram or parts source for the 3 on the tree. Perhaps I'm missing something right in front of my nose? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Tightening up a 3 on the Tree
This is from the 72 book, might be worn, but someone added cruise control might be missing a piece. Good luck....Also a post "3 OTT missing pieces" shows #39 and 40

Re: Tightening up a 3 on the Tree
#40 nylon thrust washer and #39 rubber bushing....I think 69 would be the same.

Re: Tightening up a 3 on the Tree
This is fantastic! Thank you kindly. Any idea where I could cross-reference those figures to part numbers?

Unfortunately, that's for an automatic.

Re: Tightening up a 3 on the Tree
There is an NOS shift housing on ebay for $76 from horsepower? He's a vendor here too, unsure spelling. Just in case when you open this up, it's not all gouged and damaged beyond repair, he may have the bushings you are seeking too

Re: Tightening up a 3 on the Tree
Any chance you could post a link? I searched NOS Chevy shift column on eBay and didn't find one for a 67-72 truck. I'd absolutely buy that if it has all the internals.

Re: Tightening up a 3 on the Tree
It's only the outer aluminum housing, no internals

BanjoDude, after nearly twenty years in here and while sitting here typing, am trying to figure out and understand why everyone is so quick to post outside links and options for column repair parts (sometimes incorrect) when most times we have the correct stuff available in either GM NOS or quality OE used right here onsite on the 67-72 parts board. I find myself posting our below linked long running steering column parts board f/s thread just about weekly here in the main 67-72 forum area, we have a large group of original steering columns for parts pulled and stored along with several shelved bins of OE used, GM NOS and also new repro replacement column parts on hand ready to ship out. For your 69 3 speed manual steering column overhaul, we currently have the following column diagram (shown in above second post) parts in GM NOS: #2/shift lever control housing lower plastic wear bushing, #39/shift lever control housing upper rubber washer bushing, #40/shift lever control housing upper plastic thrust washer bushing and #41/shift lever control housing available ready to ship. We have added the details and pricing in our below linked steering column parts f/s thread and given you first option on these items, please confirm in the f/s thread if interested. Thanks, Mel http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=838093 .
