Re: Vintage picture thread

Hi Everyone,

My wife took these photos in 1973 on my second trip to pick up Honda motorcycles for a dealer in New Berlin, WI. She snapped the one of me on top of the crates at the first rest area on the interstate. I ALWAYS check any load I am hauling after the first few miles and a few more times during a trip.

Name: 1973 Honda trip.jpg

The truck more or less ran well but the first trip was a doozey!

I was going to explain it all here but I realized that so many things went wrong that I figured I'd start another thread to explain everything.

........................

Sorry gang, I just spent over an hour to write up all of the problems that came up with this truck and edit this post. I lost it all when I was kicked off the forum. If I get a chance someday I'll try again.

YouTube's been doing that to me a lot lately. I'm almost finished with a lengthy, detailed composition, and my pinky hits some weird key -- poof -- the screen goes to Chrome Settings. By the time I find my way back, my Comment's been wiped.
I miss my 1940s manual Royal Typewriter.

I'm with you on missing a manual typewriter!

A couple of years ago I had to drop everything else to finish a project that took 20 years to complete. I had been posting progress to a different forum every few days and had to stop that too.

Since posting here I had forgotten that (to avoid this same problem) I would write up and save everything in a Word document first. Then I would cut and paste it all to the forum.

Obviously I need to do that again!

Re: Vintage picture thread

When I get to posting and stuff doesn't work right, I go and clear my cache. It used to be I kept getting logged out; now, it comes back with a complaint about the server being too busy. Clearing my cache solves both site complaints. If one is going to make a long post, I'd still recommend editing it offline and then pasting the thing all at once.

I thought a cache was someplace like a hollow tree, where you stuffed a couple boxes of ammo, and some cans of beans and coffee, in case you got back into that country again.
I guess I'm reading too much Loius L'Amour...

Re: Vintage picture thread post 1162 follow up

Hi Everyone,

Paul Harvey used to say, “And that’s the rest of the story”…………. He must have been talking about me …….Ha, Ha!

So here goes.

When I met the Honda dealer to discuss making my first trip (mentioned in post #1162) he said that he just had the truck serviced and checked out at a large older GMC truck dealership in Milwaukee so that everything should be fine.

In the evening when we were to start the trip, a friend (who joined me for the ride) and I found the right front tire was totally flat!

I should have taken that as an omen ‘cuz the rest of the trip was filled with problems.

The dealership was closed so I decided to idle in low gear the mile or so to the nearest 24 truck stop/service center. The tire survived and with a new tube installed we were on our way.

The truck had a fuel saddle tank on each side and a manual selector valve for switching. The fuel gauge only was hooked up to one tank so the plan was to run the second tank w/o the gauge and switch when the engine started coughing from lack of fuel.

All went as planned and after driving on the tank with the gauge for quite awhile the gauge hadn’t moved. My friend and I were discussing this when the engine started coughing again but now there was no tank to switch to!

Being dark, we could see a service station in the distance and all we could do was to hope we could coast to it.

The exit had a straight ramp to the frontage road and we ran the stop sign as there was nobody around.

We coasted into the station and both of us jumped out to push the truck the last 50 – 75 feet. The attendant saw us and ran to join in to help push.

Rolling to a stop between two lanes of pumps, we stretched hoses from each of two pumps to fill both tanks.

IIRC, the gauge started working at some time later during the return trip.

The next day we picked up the crated bikes and started back.

Then the starter stopped working.

I always carried a reasonable assortment of tools on road trips and I did for this one too.

I am pretty sure I could, and did, jump the solenoid with a screwdriver to start it, but either I had to tip the cab or maybe crawl underneath. So for the rest of the return trip I never shut it off, unless I found a hill to roll start it.

Late that night as we were leaving a rest area from a break and were merging with the interstate we lost all power and were plunged into darkness!

Luckily I had a flashlight so when we rolled to a stop on the side of the road I could trace the wiring.

I found that there was power to the push on connector for the voltage regulator but nothing coming out.

When I removed the screws holding the regulator, the 4 wire connector fell right off. The rivets that held it and the connections were so badly corroded that it couldn’t be made to stay in place. I could hold it tightly against the regulator and everything would work but as soon as I relaxed the pressure all was dead.

Hmmmmm …….. now what ? !

We had a bunch of paper napkins from several food stops. So I tried wadding them up into a pad to keep pressure on the connector and its terminals once the mounting screws were tightened. It worked and all we could do was to see how long it would last.

It lasted for three more states and we made it home!

The Honda dealer was understandably upset that I had so many problems. He had paid a handsome amount to assure it would be smooth sailing.

This wasn’t a fly-by-night repair facility but an actual GMC dealership/service center. All they did was big trucks but they sure missed the boat on this one!

I know we had a few hiccups on the second trip with my wife but they weren’t as bad as this first trip.

Great road trip story full of hiccups.
I think most everyone who plays with/owns older cars/trucks has a story or two to laugh about when it's all over.

Well ............. if you think this was a laugh, I should tell you about my first return trip moving from WI to VA and pulling into a toll area with a cloud of smoke from burning wood coming in with me. Or the time a few hours later that I knocked over a gas pump.

Oh yeah, I'm a real hoot!!

P.S. I forgot to mention that my truck just mentioned was empty and had an 18 foot steel deck. Figure that one out!

Hi Everyone,

Here I am in early 1974 striking a typical pose w/my 1967 ex-US Forestry Service Suburban 307 4speed 4WD:

Boy, I wish I could still work like that on my knees w/o using any padding!!

In December of 1973 my wife and I used this truck to deliver a motorcycle to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for their museum. We were treated like royalty including a chauffeured trip around the 2.5 mile oval.

I don't know if it still is, but at the start/finish line they had a strip of original paving bricks about 2 feet wide all the way across the straightaway. Our 'chauffeur' made sure to point this feature out as we crossed the finish line. He mentioned that this was preserved to show how the track got its nickname, "The Brickyard".

Hmmmmm ........ I just realized that I can legitimately brag that I 'drove' the entire track at Indy ....... better not ..... I can feel my head swelling already .......

We were also presented with a set of 6 gold rimmed advertising glasses that list each first place winner from 1911 to 1973:

Yeah, I blew up or burned a lot of models too. I got into more serious modeling in high school. I'd research the camouflage and markings of a particular ace, or squadron. Profile Publications were these little history pamphlets, each on a specific aircraft type, and they had several profile side views of the same bird in several different skins. A series of B-25s I tried to keep, but my Mom let my kid nephews ''play'' with them while I was overseas maintaining real world warbirds. They smashed up my Mitchell squadron.
