Do piston rings rotate...

.

My guess was wrong according to one of the comments on the video below about an SAE paper he read but almost correct according to the video author. What's your guess?

Yes they do. If they didn't you would see no wear in the area of ring groves where the ring gap never touched the sides of the grove. If you inspect a worn piston you should see even wear on the sides of the ring grove around the entire circumference of the piston.

All those engines I built, I was so careful to put the rings in their clocked positions.
