Changing 73 Column Ignition switch to 67-72 Dash Ignition Switch

Hi All,

I'm in the process of installing a shorter, collapsable tilt steering column in my 73 Squarebody. I couldn't get one with a column key locally that complied with our laws, so I need to put an ignition switch in somewhere.

I was thinking about using a dash ignition from a 67-72 c10, hoping the wiring would be similar.

Looking at the wiring, I'm honestly a bit confused. Is anyone able to help me out?

It's each of the stages and what to swap to where that has me. I feel like the squarebody has a lot of swap wiring that the early one doesn't and it's throwing me off! But also I don't have a great wiring diagram to work off of for the earlier model either.

I appreciate any help y can offer. Thanks!

Actually I have found a local ignition switch off of a Holden - Basically Chevy (GM) in Australia.

I'm hoping I could use that? I can't find any details searching sorry!

Re: Changing 73 Column Ignition switch to 67-72 Dash Ignition Switch

You are going to have difficulty swapping to a 67/72 ignition switch. The plug in is different than your steering column switch. If you can locate the wiring plug for the older switch you can run the 73 wires to the older switch plug and use the terminals for it's plug or you could splice the 73 wires to any wires that may be left in the older plug, if you can find one with the harness wires still in the plug.
Your wires are different colors than the older ones, so you will have to sort them out.
I located this youtube which may be of some help.
