starter wiring
I have a new harness from M&H wiring it has a purple and yellow wire going to the starter. the mini starter only has one small post on it , if i put both on the post it starts cranking time i flip the key on, but cranks right with just the purple wire on. my question is what does the yellow wire feed? truck won't start but i'm assuming it's timing

Re: starter wiring
If you have updated the distributor to an HEI unit, you won't need that yellow wire, remove it from the harness.. A points type ignition system uses a resistor wire between the RUN position on the ignition switch and coil. Its purpose is to lower the supply voltage to the coil. The yellow wire on the "R" terminal on the factory starter solenoid goes to the ignition coil. This wire provides a higher voltage to the coil during the start mode.
If you retain the stock points type distributor along with the mini starter, you can try leaving the yellow wire disconnected.. If you have difficulty with starting the engine, you'll need either a stock starter, OR perhaps (may not be possible) replace the existing solenoid on the mini starter.. |
