Re: 292 fuel pump ?

I betcha it wasn’t the fuel pump!
Likely the weather.

Do you have an operating choke and heat riser on the exhaust.

Re: 292 fuel pump ?

I'd go to the local parts store web site and find the pump there. Then buy it locally.

Re: 292 fuel pump ?

Not the weather, put Pertronix ll ignition and coil 2 weeks ago , choke and heat riser still in place and working, clear fuel filter dry ,no gas in it . When I cranked it up yesterday using the choke ,wouldn't run unless choke was fully on ,1st clue something was wrong , truck last few times I drove it had "flat spot" about 55 mph and wouldn't go any faster , checked timing, idle speed , vacuum, fuel filter had gas in it on Monday. Hope it is fuel pump and not Crusty Rusty in fuel tank !!! Original truck w 68,889 miles on it , have put 1200 + miles on it since I got it .
Thanks to all who replied.

Re: 292 fuel pump ?

Doesn't really sound like fuel pump.
New Pertronix and it runs like crap does not surprise me.

Recent experience with new pump. Bought one from O'reilly listed as "Precision Pump". Checked running pressure with "T" fitting at 12psi. Was supposed to be 5.5-8 psi. Took it back and got another from them called a "Delphi Pump". It was supposed to be 7 psi, but produced 14 psi.
Summit sells a "Carter" pump, but they don't give the pressure. Carter web page says this pump provides a min. of 3 psi and a max of 5.5 psi. Installed this one and produced 14 psi.
The Carter pump box contained a baggie with a part # on it, with a gasket and inst sheet inside.
The Delphi box contained the same baggie, part # and inst sheet. Both pumps appeared to be exactly the same and the Precision Pump was probably identical.

I called Carter and got the typical bla, bla, bla. It took some gumming before he finally admited they were the same pump, but remained vague about which one or if even someone else made both.

He said Carter was fully aware of the overpressure problem with mechanical pumps and was in the process of redesigning all their pumps.
Yada, yada, yada.

With the pumps sold today, you need a regulator. I wouldn't trust one of those MrGasket/ JCWhitney regulators. I got a Holley style regulator from Jegs for $20.

Re: 292 fuel pump ?

Awesome ,this is exactly the type of information that I was looking for ! The picture really rocks , made my day . I can see the need for the regulator. I have a pressure gage and will definitely use it . The 71 Chevrolet Truck Chassis Service Manual that I have says 3-5 lbs for
the pressure for my application. Guess the old Rochester Monojet with manual choke will need external regulator before i blow it up with a new fuel pump . Carb and fuel pump appears to be original equipment on this 292 . Truck is a 71 C 50 292 4 sp with vacuum operated 2 sp rear end . Thank you so much for your time and consideration and pictures. Vacuum holds steady at 17.5 , truck has a gigantic vacuum booster underneath the cab and vacuum control unit to shift rear end . If you have any more wisdom and knowledge to share about this don't hesitate to add to replies. Thanks man , have a great day!!!

Re: 292 fuel pump ?

I've been running an Edelbrock 1404 [500 CFM] 4 barrel carb on an Offenhauser intake on my 292 L6 with a stock mechanical fuel pump for 20 years and I've never had the alleged fuel feed overpressure gripe everyone's chasing here.
Eddies are alleged to have fuel pressure sensativity.

I did bow to popular internet sentiment once and put a Holley Fuel Regulator on the Carter AFB 9635S feeding my V8 350 on a '71 GMC Jimmy many years ago. When I hired an expert to help me tune up my 350 so it would pass emissions, he looked at the Regulator and said you don't need that. So I took it off.
The gripe was in the chinese parts in my HEI.

On my 292, I did run a Pertronix Ignitor II/Flamethrower II coil on an Accel Blueprint L6 distributor. It ran well for about 7 years, then I experienced the following gripe:
Started and ran fine at street speeds ~55MPH.
At RPMs above 3000 [just when the Ignitor II was supposed to do its thing] the Ignition would black out. I'd be deadmilling -- whole rotating assembly moving at speed without spark -- until I switched Ignition OFF, then ON, then popped the clutch in 4th or 3rd. It happened whenever I tried the Freeway.

I discussed this with the Pertronix tech on the phone who said to send in the components and they'd check it out.
I never heard back.
I went back to points for a year, then converted to a US made HEI.
No further ignition problems in 9 years.
