700r4, only reverse and 1st
So to start with, I've converted over to a 700r4 that is a Facebook Marketplace rebuild special. After a new torque converter and proper fluid fill, I only have park, reverse and 1st. It won't shift up. I just put a pressure tester on it. So cold, about 800rpms, I have 60psi at idle and drive, and 90psi in reverse. Is it like a stuck TV? Or did I get screwed over on the rebuild? TV cable is adjusted properly, governor isn't sticking nor is the plastic gear bad.

pull on the TV cable with the vehicle idling
Reverse pressure should double, or close to it. Proves the TV function Acting like the second gear apply band length isn't correct. It could be lots of other things. Start there. If you can contact the builder, he should help? |

You need to make sure the manual shift linkage has not fallen off the valve on the valve body which requires dropping the pan to have a look. Above and beyond that MULTIPLE things can cause it. You can also check that the band is sitting properly in the anchor pin while the pan is off. if the band is NOT then when it goes to engage it just moves off to the side instead of clamping and shifting into second.

Band on anchor pin. I'll have to Google to see what you're talking about. Pics would be helpful.

I see the pin your referring to in the thread. Should I be looking for it being stuck or something?

Re: 700r4, only reverse and 1st
No, the pin is the 'anchor' point for the band to stay put. Then the servo/piston pushes in on the OTHER side of the band and causes it to clamp with force around the forward drum. This happens in second and fourth. BUT.....if they missed the anchor pin, the band could possibly be just sitting there loose on the one side.
If I remember correctly, with pan off there are a few small gaps towards the front where you can actually SEE the BAND. You can use a small screwdriver to see if it's moving around loosey goosey. The anchor pin CAN NOT be accessed without dropping the VB. |
