Plastic "chrome" door edge guard?

My SPID sticker says my truck came with door edge guards. I understand I can buy those as reproductions, but they also scratch the paint. How about putting on the modern plastic edge guard that looks like chrome? Would it reproduce the factory look or just look like crap.

Re: Plastic "chrome" door edge guard?

Would not look the same and the "chrome" would begin to peel or fade after a few years. But it would be easy to obtain and easy to replace as needed occasionally.

The original metal ones are flat on the outside of the door. The plastic stuff is rounded on the outward face. The plastic also shrinks over time and would likely begin to pull up short at the top and the bottom and may begin to look bunched or stretched where it curves around the contours of the door edge shape.

If you plan on using your truck, buy the stainless steel, put them on and drive it, what little bit of marring is done will be baby sh*t compared to road rash/scars/chips etc.. Just my .02 worth.

I guess if you are going to be taking them on and off for car shows or something, it might be an issue. I just put mine on, left them on, and called it a day. They look great and i don't have to worry about them.

Re: Plastic "chrome" door edge guard?

The plastic edge guards have been on my truck since my PiL owned it. First time I saw the truck was in '80. They look OK, but the truck is no show piece.

Very well put.
When they were put on a new truck, they were not intended to be taken off “for cleaning”.

The intent is to put them on, and leave them in place, to protect the edge of the door.
I have a set of the Factory Stainless Edge guards, and have been “on the fence” on whether I’m going to put them on once I repaint my truck.
In the current “Patina” state that my truck is in, I’ll put them on once in a while, just to see if I want to put them on permanently.
It’s kinda like considering getting a tattoo. Once it’s there, it’s there for good.

Where does the trim go, from the window frame down or just from the top trim piece down. I cannot find a decent pic anywhere.

We recently sold a few sets of the optional stainless RPO B93 door edge guards in the below linked "Several GM NOS 67-72 Parts" f/s thread on the parts board, the NOS guards were item #1 on the parts list. The OE style push on stainless steel door edge guards are LH/RH specific and cannot be installed incorrectly due to the profile of the door edge and body line present, they are only going to push on in one location. Here's a picture of my truck with the factory door edge guards on.
