Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"

Also, I was mowing the lawn and a fella in a lowered extend a cab 1993 or so Chevy truck sauntered by at very low speed while my garage door was open revealing it's contents. I probably should not be worried but they really slowed down like they wanted to talk or something and then slowly rode off. I guess I should keep that thing closed or put up some sort of tarp or something.

So looks like you used two pumps to make one? Now I want to see the whole thread!

Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"

Ok. so I checked out the PO has me PO'd thread and wow that is a lot of work going on there! Good for you and you ambition levels!
So I came across a 2010 1500 Chevy fuel pump that looks to be pretty long or deep. I may try another pump to get my length before cutting and splicing as a replacement would be easier in the event of a failure.

Thanks for checking it out
I found that the mounting system is the most critical of the whole system and there are different types my first attempt was a failure

I’ll try to find pics of the one that worked well for me

If you look at the top of my tank you’ll see that nut certs didn’t work clearance problems with the bed and height of the pump, so I had a shelf welded in my tank and that fixed everything

Levels of ambition rise and fall like the tides……ebb and flow, but it has been an interesting journey

Good idea on future replacements maybe even cutting a hole in your bed floor so you don’t have drop the tank for replacement

Dude I hate to spend your money but I don’t think any of the above will work with a poly tank

Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"

Well I think I have that figured out. In my post #175 you will see the method I am going to try. Two stainless rings sandwiching a mount cut from a 2007 tank. It will need a gasket of course and I will have to get creative with line routing.
Did you have to modify that pump at all? Does it fit to the bottom of your tank?

No and yes the beauty of the set up is in the mounting system but I don’t know if it will work with plastic

I did try to sandwich my pump to the tank with nutserts and it was a failure

Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"

I sort of mimicked a system that Ricks Tanks used to sell. Theirs was aluminum. I am using 1/8" stainless with 32 bolts. It may be kinda heavy for the poly tank but I figure that if I get a pump long enough to hit the bottom of the tank and it is sprung by the springs that I will have the bottom of the tank to give a bit of support as well. I am trying to keep the poly tank to keep rust from forming etc. That and I already have it. The pump you are using is somewhat similar to the one I found for a 17" deep tank on a 2500 Chevy. My tank is about 13.5" deep so hopefully it will squish down on the springs and fit. I can always shorten the shafts or springs but I am trying not to modify the pump itself.

I think it sat at the bottom of the original tank.
That unit NEEDS to sit on the very bottom of the tank. That's why it has springs. If you look at the picture on the left, the unit is sitting on the bottom of my tank, yet it sticks out an inch above the mounting ring. The springs compress when the unit is bolted into place.
The "bucket" is constantly being refilled with fuel by your return line and a one-way valve at the bottom of it. In fact, if you only have an inch of fuel in the tank, that bucket will be full. This keeps the pump cool and keeps it quiet.
Unfortunately you used a sending unit that is too short for the deep tank you want to use. You will have to extend the rods somehow.
I only use full plastic units when doing this type of conversion and fab my tanks from aluminum. I also use plastic fuel lines that run from the tank to the engine because it's easy to route, wont corrode and compatible with ethanol fuels.

Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"

You fellas have some fuel tank skills! I want to find a fuel pump that I do not have to modify but until then I may use this one with some mods. I would have to extend the rods as well as the wire leads to the pump. I am also planning on using plastic stock type fuel lines. Do you use the Dorman toll to make them?

I made my own tool from a caulking gun, but you can buy them fairly cheap. Plastic (nylon) fuel lines is one of those things that once you use it once, you will never use anything else.

Once you modify the unit to sit on the bottom of your tank, it will work great.
Good luck.
