Re: My 71 gmc suburban

[QUOTE=BigBird05;8998207]With the price of gas today I would put some extra protection on the vent hose wear it touches that support rib.[

Thanks for the heads up. I will either wrap the hose with another hose or install some clamps so there aren’t any run through. I hate the way they look but I also had to install a locking gas cap because I’ve already had gas stolen out of it when my boy drove it to his moms house.

This bracket lines up decently at the back of the alternator but I’m still too far back. I found some spacers at my local hardware store and between those and a spacer behind the alternator fan it lines up now. Is the single arm bracket different from what I have? I don’t know big block GMs much.

Re: My 71 gmc suburban

So not much progress on the burb, just been driving it. Recently I was going around a corner, the trans downshifts, I give it throttle, it shifts to 3rd and with a little more throttle it kicks into passing gear and that’s it. It never would get back to 3rd.im pissed driving on the shoulder the 5 miles home. I had the trans rebuilt in 2020 or 2021 and I only have about 15k on it since then and that was due to a loss of 3rd gear except that time there was a hell of a whine at the time of losing it. I tried the simple stupid stuff first, pulled the governor and made sure the gear hadn’t broke and the weights were doing what they are supposed to do, I pulled the vacuum modulator and made sure it was functioning and that it had vacuum as well. I drained the fluid and no visible signs of carnage and opted up the filter and it was perfect. No metal. I took off the kick down solenoid and inspected that, nothing looked out of place but I decided to put voltage to it and it appears to be in working order but after hitting it with voltage I noticed a piece of metal was stuck in the small hole in the center. It came out when I rubbed my fingernail over it. After looking at how this functions it appears the metal blocked the hole and kept it in the passing gear. I replaced the solenoid just as a precaution and after new filter and refill all is right in the world. To say I was happy was an understatement.

Re: My 71 gmc suburban

Hey Bryce...glad you got your tranny working again! I was reading through your thread, and noticed the last comment before this one (from a few years ago) was regarding your alternator bracket. Mine is nearly identical to yours (we both have 454's) as my alternator also sits in front of the bracket (picture #one). The second picture isn't the best, but it does show that the attachment point at the water pump only has two washers for spacers (1/4" total) and the attachment point at the intake doesn't have any. We both have "long" water pumps...but maybe there is a difference with our castings (mine is an Edelbrock high flow). Also shown in the pictures is that I took advantage of the top lip of the bracket to route the black heavy gauge charging cable that I ran from the alternator directly to the positive side of the battery (the small hole I used to zip tie it secure was already there?). You've probably already worked through your "spacing" issue, so this most likely a moot point...but hey...you never know!

Re: My 71 gmc suburban

Thanks for the pictures of your setup Woody. I believe that is what I ended up doing with mine and have not had any issues. I finally got it to quit squealing when I got on it. God I hate that noise🤣
