67 C10 Z Bar help - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have a 67 C10 that I'm putting together. I have a small block on factory mounts both engine and bellhousing. The truck according to the VIN is a factory V8. The engine and Z bar is from a 69 and has the factory ball stud mount still on it. My issue is the Z bar. The tube is 6-3/4" long not including the ball stud part and I have at most 6" from the engine bracket to the frame bracket. Was the Z bar in 67 different? I'm considering cutting the tube in half and making it about an 1" shorter, but I'd like to know for sure I don't have something wrong.

Went and measured one I have 1967 C10 V8 truck

Tube is 5 3/8 long

The longer Z-bar may be for an inline 6 engine as the mounting point is further away from the frame.

Thank you. I've searched and never saw a measurement. Only that the 6 and 8 were different. Is that one possibly for sale?

I have seen some say the longer was V8 and some say the shorter was so I didn't know for sure. Especially when I never saw a dimension listed on a verified part like Jason listed.

I just measured my z-bar at 6-3/4". Factory 307/3 spd '70 C10

Wasn't the 67-68 frame rail wider through that area? That might explain the difference

I think it was wider on its inner dimension only because it wasn’t cut out for clearance. That could still be a possibility. I know the z bar I have came out of a 69 V8 truck that I converted to a big block automatic. I always see them listed as fitting 67-72 but now I’m seeing discrepancies.

Both of my 68's are small block motors and manual transmission. I'll measure both of them tomorrow and report back.

The V8 engine is wider than an inline 6, therefor the Z-bar is shorter on the V8.

1967 was an oddball year for the SBC Z bar. It was the same as the inline 6 Z bar, frame bracket (inward with jog) and clutch pedal push rod (straight) that year. In 1968, the SBC Z bar/frame bracket/push rod design changed. The Z bar got longer, the frame bracket was flipped around the other way and made more square shaped, and the push rod got a dog-leg shape. Here's a thread on the subject:

Thank you for the Excellent info! Hopefully by next week I’ll have the correct z-bar installed and can confirm what does and doesn’t fit. I think my next C10 will be a square body! 🤣 This is my second 67 out of countless 67-72 trucks. Crazy how they changed so much between the years and options.

Disregard my information about the inline 6 Z-bar being longer. It is not, the longer bell crank or Z-bar goes with the V8.

Iline 6 motors have a different engine mounting set up amd uses the shorter bell cranks.

A lot of the parts on a '67 are leftovers from the previous model run. In other words, there are a lot of "67 only" parts in the 67-72 model run.

Big Shout out to Jason! He shipped me the correct Z bar (For Free) and I have a clutch linkage that feels like it works! Now I have to get the engine running to see if it will move on its own power since 1990.

The timing was right. I had just taken that Z-bar off the 1967 I'm working on. The truck came without engine or trans, and I'm LS swapping anyway. I figured the Z-bar would just sit in a box for years, like so many other things.

Here's my solution to a '68 L6 Upper Clutch Rod. It's a length of steel rod [or iron] the machinist threaded on both ends for Heim Joints.
Works great. LMC stole my machinist's idea. It will be a lot cheaper if you fab it yourself. LMC's price is exhorbitant.
