What caused my coil to explode?
My ignition coil is only 2 months old. Well I know my quadjet is crappy and I died in the intersection on a nice hot 90degree day. Got it started again and to my friends house. We got in the truck after about 10 min and I tried to start the engine. Sounded like a weak battery (starter speed slowing). Pop the hood, coil exploded, Pink Coil fluid EVERYWHERE and coil half out of its case and mangled (never seen the inside of a coil before).
What could of caused this? I got a new coil, and now I have no spark? When I got the truck the condensor in the distirbutor was bad. I replaced it and the truck started. FYI... Weird.

I have no idea...but I'd like to see a pic.
Check and make sure that coil is getting LESS than 12 volts...6 to 9 is what it needs. Ensure it is wired up correctly. ummm, I can't think of anything else. |

I saw that once before, years ago, in a 66 chev panel, V-8, at the time the driver left the key on with the engine not running and I suspected the engine shut down and stopped at the point where the ignition points were closed, after a hour or two the coil heated up to the point of explosion. That's all I could come up with. Was your ignition left on for a period of time?

I've never personally seen a coil explode, but I agree with Andy, make sure the coil gets its power through the resistance wire, and isn't getting a full 12 volts. Points systems suck anyways, they're hard to deal with, and keep in tune.
Not being a smarta$$ here, but why don't you just put an HEI in it, and you won't have to deal with points ever again. It's a relatively easy swap, unless you want the truck to be 100% original. TJ

Get a priest to perform an excorsism on your truck. Sorry, that's the only thing that comes to mind.
