Starting Issue
Have a 1970 c10 with a 1985 305 (found out after I bought it and working on 383 to put in it). In the past week or so when the truck is cold when I try and start it it sounds like its binding. If I am patient and try a few times it finally starts and runs normal. If i cut it off and start again no issues.
I did a new starter about 8 months ago (pmrg for a 96 tahoe), has 1/0 cables for the battery and starter, battery is less than a year old. checked timing 15 initial, 37 total when i did the starter but can recheck. The starter has been in and fine until all of a sudden. Think potentially the starter is just going out? Recorded a video to show what I am talking about and uploaded it to youtube to make sharing easier. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zH4UXapFVg |

Re: Starting Issue
This would be my order of investigation:
1) weak battery 2) bad connections to starter or ground 3) bad starter or solenoid |

Re: Starting Issue
I'd start at the battery as well. Measure voltage while truck is sitting, then measure the drop when cranking. Too big of a drop and that will confirm a battery issue.

Re: Starting Issue
Take a look at that alternator pully - it's definitely off-center and looks like it may be hanging up? It's moving in and out when running...!

Re: Starting Issue
Ya'll are the best! The mil spec style terminal i had installed the one side has a crack and was not clamping onto the battery for a clean connection. Had a spare set and threw on a replacement negative clamp. Fired up great. Love how simple these old trucks are.

I have been debating going more oem like this https://store.alternatorparts.com/25...b_E6eCSTAS2nfL or trying to find a aftermarket metal. Any suggestions? Ordered one of these to try but open to suggestions still https://www.cvfracing.com/alternator-fan/ Last edited by chappys4life; 03-21-2025 at 04:59 PM. |
