1967 K10 CST Wheel ID?
I recently picked up a pretty original Silver Poly ‘67 K10 CST. According to the VIN, it’s a 5600 GVW model. The owner’s manual states that the 5600 GVW trucks had the 17.5” wheels. The SPID doesn’t have any wheel & tire options noted. The five wheels on the truck are all Kelsey Hayes #76841, 15 x 8L with 4.25” backspacing and dated 11/67. There is some visible original black paint in places. There are no provisions for caps, but there are holes for clips. None of the five wheels appear to ever have had clips installed. There is no GM stamp.
I’ve read on this site that the ‘67 & ‘68 K10 trucks were delivered new with black wheels and no caps. Was this also true for CST? I question the originality of the wheels. With an 11/67 manufacturing date, they would seem more suited for a ‘68. I would like to know your thoughts on the originality of these wheels vs. the 17.5” high clearance wheels…or, did the truck have something entirely different from the factory that were replaced with what appears to be generic K-H wheels? Thank you… |

Re: 1967 K10 CST Wheel ID?
Sorry I can't identify them. They look like an earlier wheel that might have had clips for a cap that were removed.
The standard wheel for 1967 K10 was a 15 x 5 1/2 wheel. I'm guessing you saw this info about wheel color in 1967? https://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vbo...6&postcount=15 If truck was a 2 tone it would have body color wheels. So...if your paint codes is just 523 the wheels would have been black. Just because I think this truck looks amazing in the silver 2 tone with the silver wheels, I'm going to post it |

The 15x8 steel wheels were a factory option. Folks look for those wheels so they can put on the bigger tires, but still have that factory look. Too me they are pretty rare, but not how true "rare" is when describing them. I just not have personally seen them.

I found a person on the internet that collects vintage wheel catalogs. They are going to research the specs of my wheels and report back. I will post the details here. I would also still like to find out more information about what the owner's manual shows regarding the 5600 GVW trucks having the 17.5" wheels. Unless I'm interpreting it wrong (I probably am), those wheels seemed standard for that GVW. I think the specs in the manual are the minimum requirements. Hopefully someone here can school me on that... |

Re: 1967 K10 CST Wheel ID?
In follow up and to corroborate what Palf70Step said in an earlier post, I’ve been informed by a wheel guru on another site that my wheels in question are a factory set of wheels. Both K-H and the National Wheel & Rim Association (NWRA) listings show it as NWRA cross reference X-40340. Fitted to 1/2 ton Chevrolet & GMC 46-70 except for G10, Blazer 69-70 & Jimmy 70.
The 11/67 date on my wheels has me thinking that someone installed them shortly after purchasing the truck, but I guess I’ll never know. The SPID shows nothing and the Owner’s Manual states that it should’ve been equipped with the high clearance 17.5” wheels based on its 5600 GVW. Thanks for having a look and commenting! Gary |
