Re: Yet another GMC build

Since I cut a brace out to move the tank, making another brace above the tank. Sway bar and links in now. Look at the back of the notch and you’ll see that I bent some 3/4 emt and welded it in before I closed the notch. I can put wiring from the frame rail through rather than around the notch. Did that on both sides.

Re: Yet another GMC build

Loooks good.
Canadian hotrods frames have all the electrical, brake and fuel lines run inside their boxed frames. Good idea I guess, it keeps it clean looking. If there were a problem I guess the frame could be opened up or the problem circuit could be ran on the outside.

Re: Yet another GMC build

Bed is back on. Still need wiring and brake lines, and to build a bed cover to hide the ugly. Realizing now that I’ll likely be adding lots of weight which will likely offset any benefit of being a couple inches lower. The rear view already looks better. I have always hated how the gas tank hangs WAY below the roll pan. And I had a frame rail that drooped and required spacers, and I fixed that. Hopefully the sway bar helps. And the rear frame is definitely stiffer now. We’ll see how it turns out.

Re: Yet another GMC build

3/4” square frame, stainless strips, 18 gage sheet metal. Ordered a couple quarts of bed liner so I can match the bed. Should cover the hole and look like it was on purpose.

Re: Yet another GMC build

So when you open the gate you have a nice little storage spot for things, if you cover the fuel tank with something protective. Looks good.

Re: Yet another GMC build

Spray lined the backside. Still need an alignment. The truck is definitely lower, my fender lip was above the tire. And recall that I raised the lip1.5 inches. If I hadn’t there would be some serious overhang. Waiting on the tintable coating to arrive for the top.

Black was the bottom. Just sprayed the top orange. Now have to hurry and wait for the Raptorliner to dry.

Re: Yet another GMC build

I made a big decision and recently sold the truck. It left for its new home today and I hope the new owner likes it. I'm going to try and finish the C10 roadster project that I started forever ago. I kept going back to the 56 and couldn't stop changing things and losing focus on finishing the other truck. It's been a fun 16 years though.

Maybe. At least I won't be distracted by the 56 anymore. Part of the problem is that my wife hated riding in the truck. I scared her a couple times and she already distrusts older cars that don't have all the safety stuff on them and because, according to her, they break down constantly. It was mostly sitting in the garage while I kept throwing money and time at it.

Part of the deal was that to give it up, I wanted something that I would find acceptable (fast, fun, looks good), and she didn't mind riding in. She ended up finding a 22 Challenger Scat Pack 392 with only 6000 miles on it. I've been driving the same Ram 4x4 for 15 years, so I get a new driver with Brembo brakes and 485hp. She doesn't have anxiety riding in it because it has airbags and ABS. I still have the C10 project, so I still have three cars to her one Kia Optima. Pretty unfair for her. Her stipulation was that I not change anything. We'll see how long that lasts, or how sneaky I can be!

C10 will eventually get some love when I have more time. Online college classes keeping me busy and last week I got electrocuted with 277V and fell off a 6ft ladder at work. (Glad to even still be here) Not even allowed to drive at this point and will spend some time recuperating before I can get in the garage again.

A friend of mine actually pulled this one off to get a Whipple on his AWD Yukon Denali. But his wife, she don't know cars so good. My wife, on the other hand, grew up with a car guy for a dad and is not that easy. I didn't know these things had a line lock, paddle shift, and active suspension from the factory. In track mode it shifts like it has a stage 3 shift kit in it, and the previous owner put bullet mufflers on it, so it sounds pretty darn good. And... we took a weekend trip in it, and I got 23mpg on the highway. It's just darn hard to build an old one to do what some of these newer cars can do.

Re: Yet another GMC build

lol. Or, with traction control off, she’s says “why does the car keep spinning the tires all the time?”. You say” Dodge put tiny all season tires on it.” Her: “can’t you put on wider performance tires to stop that?” Me : “yes but the wheels are too narrow for wider tires, I’d have to get new wheels too” Result….

Ok, I’ll stop posting Challenger stuff on a truck board. New owner says he loves the truck and is already making some changes.
