Good afternoon Richard...trying to revive this old thread LOL. I am about to do this same swap and wanted to know if you could tell me what depth did you drill the new bellhousing holes into the trans case? Thank you in advance sir.

Hi Thomas,

Not Richard but check out my post #84. It explains what I did with mine. The secret is, if the hole is going to come out too close to the trans main case and force the bit off to the side, stop just as it starts to break through. All of the holes that weren't close to the case I drilled all the way through.

I have a question about the high hump transmission cover

Do any vendors sell a high hump transmission cover with no transmission shifter hole in it?

I'm pretty sure they are reproduced but I can't tell you off the top of my head who sells them....

EDIT: https://www.classicindustries.com/product/153761.html

They are pretty proud of them. I'm sure there are other vendors that sell them too. I would put out some feelers in your area, you might get lucky....

Sorry to bring up a old thread, but would this technique work for a 4wd nv4500 obviously id have to move the crossmember on the back. Just wondering if the 4wd has the same stick out and pilot size as the sm465

I can't answer your question. I have a 4x4 w/NV4500 setup in a '91 Chevy but the engine and trans are still in the truck. I need to get it dismantled but I don't have time right now.

Maybe someone else will know the answer to your question.

Re: Installing The NV4500 5 Speed Overdrive Transmission In The C-30

In May I bought a used NV4500(1993/94 GM version), and was told is was good and useable. I finally got it "installed" in the truck about a month ago and finally finally got a driveshaft made and installed a few days ago last thursday.

I installed it by drilling holes using Leons method. I did a very poor job, but it worked.

The trans is bolted only using 3 of the 4 bolts, tightened with a combo wrench.

Filled with Amsoil MTGQT-EA.

It ran fine, I just wanted to drive it through the gears and specifically into 5th, no grinding, ran good, and I can proceed with other work on the truck knowing it *should* drive fine for the time being.

Thank you Leon.

No problem. Glad you got it dialed in. I don't know which bolt you had trouble with but I would definitely try to get it installed. That trans weighs close to 200 pounds and needs all of the bolts in it if possible.....

Researching doing this trans swap. Found a NV4500 out of 96 Chevy, with the chevy bellhousing ofcourse. But after reading this thread I am not sure it will work. Is there any reason one out if a 96 wouldn't work?

I honestly can't tell you. Maybe one of the other guys that have done the swap with that trans will chime in.

You would have to compare all of the measurements of the two transmissions. such as the overall input shaft length, pilot nose length, and front bearing retainer diameter where the throwout bearing fits. Does that have a hydraulic throwout bearing? I also don't know if the crank sticks out of the back of the block farther on the '96 or not.

Yes it will work. Just get a bellhousing from an SM465 like Leon did and drill it using this threads instructions.

I bought an NV4500 that looks very similar and was advertised as from a 93 ish chevy. I used my original bellhousing. I'll take pics of it tomorrow, it is "roughly" installed and I drove it around the block once. Now I gotta go back and "finalize" the install.

Is this trans for sale somewhere around $1200? That seems to be the going rate last time I was in the game.

Yeah, I already have the SM465 bellhousing. My concern is the the input shaft stick out distance and pilot shaft diameter. And then also the yoke on the rear.
Yes, they are asking $1200 dollars for it. That is kind of why I am trying to find find someone that has done it successfully with a later (not 93-95 like Leon used) before deopping that kind of cash on a maybe, or something I am going to have to spend a ton more for adapter/swapped piece etc.

I went to a guy in Ontario and measured a trans he had and all of the measurements you are asking about were identical to an SM465.

The yoke on the rear looks identical to mine, and when I needed my new driveshaft made I simply took the yoke to them and asked them to make the shaft with the correct U joint.

These NV4500 were first available in 1992 GM products. The tag on my trans is dated 1992. I believe it came from a 1992-1993 GM truck.

Here's some more pics just to show what I was doing. When I first installed the trans I could only get 3 of the 4 trans-to-bellhousing bolts, I installed studs for the top two fasteners, I used a "bolt coming from the trans side" for the lower passenger; I then used a bolt coming from the ENGINE side for the lower drivers bolt, and tapped the trans case for it to go into.

So the only hole that was not tapped was the lower passenger--I used a customized bolt for that hole; all other holes were drilled and tapped (3/8-13?)

I was not able to install a nut on the top passenger stud, and I couldn't tighten all the other three bolts because of tight access. So I tol myself later I'd remove the power package and do it the hard way, I'd separate the trans/engine at the bellhousing.

But I ended up not needing to do that THANK GOD. I bought 8" grade 8 bolts and threaded them into the engine and slid the trans back. I was originally going to completely remove the trans altogether and use the four 8" bolts to simply make re-alignment easier.

But after I slid the trans back 2-3", I realized that was plenty of room to tighten all four fasteners. Boy did that save me a lot of pain.

I held the back of the engine up with some 1/4 lumber, was rickity, but worked. I doubt it would have worked if the trans was completely removed.
