49 gauges - stud size?
Hey guys.
I rebuilt my gauges and I want to do a write-up, but I'm stuck. What size is the darn stud on the back of the dash that holds the gauges in. Mine were carefully stored a decade ago. If I could only remember where...

Re: 49 gauges - stud size?
I'm thinking 12 32 but may be wrong. I don't know what I did with the nuts off the speedometer when I pulled it out of the 51 cab I have out here but I'd still have to run a tap through one to figure it out as my eyeball measuring device isn't what it was 40 years ago.

Re: 49 gauges - stud size?
IIRC the studs on my 49 gauges took a 10-32 nut
12-32 is certainly a possibility, but the only place I've ever seen that thread pitch is on a firearm. Strangly enough, I believe I have a tap and die in that size (inherited from my FIL) |

10 32 may well be correct, I went out and looked last night couldn't find any of the nuts.

Re: 49 gauges - stud size?
I think 10-24
here is a picture of a dash modification where you can see one and it does not look like fine thread to me. |

Re: 49 gauges - stud size?
First thing I have to say is GET A THREAD GUAGE!!!! They cost a few dollars and they will save your butt often.
Second, if you are building old cars and trucks GET A TAP AND DIE SET! Ok, I just went out and checked mine. First photo you see how anal I am. The studs were all wrapped in masking tape so they don't get filled up with primer. LOL I checked it with a tread gauge and it's 32 threads per inch. I couldn't find a 10-32 nut so I used the 10-32 die and it spun on like a new nut and stud. Which is why I cover them so they don't get primer or paint on them. Anyway, yes, it's a 10-32. Brian

Re: 49 gauges - stud size?
Honestly guys, get a tap and die set. I use it VERY often cleaning threads before putting a nut on. Or running a tap into a fixed nut so the screw or bolt goes perfectly into it.
On old cars and trucks it's so useful, instead of messing up threads worse forcing a nut on bolt, it cleans the threads up to perfection so the nut or bolt just rolls on with love. Get one, they are as cheap as $10 for SAE only or a few hundred $ if you want an awesome complete kit for everything you could ever work on. Brian

Re: 49 gauges - stud size?
Thanks men!
My cheap-o Harbor Freight tap and die set let me down on this one. It's sparse under 1/4". I posted a ton of pictures of my gauge rebuild in a different thread. I think it turned out pretty good. |

Actually, MARTINSR, I forgot all about the little key in there for smaller sizes. Thanks again!
