Those wheels are a work of engineering art.

Dad got real quiet and I said "what's wrong?".

Keith, those 8 lug wheels on a Gran Prix caught my eye right away in 1963 or so. I wonder what Pontiac designers were thinking when they chose them as there was no other passenger car, that I can remember, that was using that type.

My step dad had a tuquoise and white one when he married my mom in 1963 and bought her a new '65 impala four door hardtop when they came out. My older brother was almost old enough to drive when he sold the '57 to a kid up the street. Sure made my brother mad.

Just your usual Pontiac Motor Division engineering innovation.

There were other manufacturers using the open center “mobile home” style wheel (like VW or Porsche) but the large aluminum integral brake drum was an attempt to manage heat and the resultant brake fade.

These were the same guys that were using aluminum body panels, drilling holes in the frames to save weight, and mating two powerglides together to have a clutch actuated automatic four speed (with a rear mounted swing axle transaxle, no less).

I'd love to know what they were smokin.

Re: Vintage vehicles driving around. See one post it up.

The front drums are held on with the spindles, but the rears actually bolt to the axle flange using the original 5 lugs.

So, in total, there are 42 lug nuts in the entire system:

LF = 8
RF = 8
LR = 8 around the periphery + 5 in the middle
RR = 8 around the periphery + 5 in the middle

And, for the '63 model year, the LH side are LH threads.

I feel that that year of Grand Prixs with the roof line like yours is one of the classiest looking vehicles of the 1960's. Yours has everything done just right!

Re: Vintage vehicles driving around. See one post it up.

My first time to see one I guess was in 1963. A friend of my dad stopped by in his new one. Maroon I believe it was and had those wheels. They were so different they really got my attention.
42 lugs? Oh man. I think they over complicated the wheel deal.
A couple years later a couple guys from Cali came to town in a home built hotrod, V8 powered and an unusual transmission. I believe it was an automatic with a clutch. I saw him put it in gear and let off the clutch and it just idled there like any other auto trans. When he left he just mashed the accelerator pedal. Was that likely a Pontiac trans you speak of?
Childhood memories. I was maybe 10.

Unrestored cars like this Chevelle are my favorites. It sounded nice and healthy too! From North Portland last Friday.

Re: Vintage vehicles driving around. See one post it up.

Seen this beauty parked at the local auction house again, there's been a lot of vintage and classic rides going thru there lately. It's a '49 Studebaker, don't see many of these pickups out and about. Riding on 15'' rallies but don't know if original GM or an after market wheel? Not sure what the wheel spacing was for these. Up from Oklahoma by what the tag shows. Clean looking rig and not one you would see very often today.

A couple from last week. The Ranchero was in Scappoose. The VW pickup was out in Northeast.

Different for sure. Cut the top off a sedan and for some reason lengthened the nose.

70 to 72 Camaro SS from earlier this weekend and the Courier from today. I couldn't tell you the last time I saw a running Courier. The Camaro looked like it was right from 1980. Either an old repaint or a well cared for original. The rear quarters were starting to rust but nothing terrible.

I agree I had a nice 71 or 72 (forgot exactly) Luv. I really liked the look of the truck, but I had weird mechanical issues with it. Brackets breaking, stuff coming loose, enough so I finally sold it. Im sure I took a picture or two of it but no idea where they would be.

One of three vintage vehicles I was able to get a pic locally yesterday. The other two were a lifted 1966 International Pick up and a 1969 Nova, all in about 15 minutes of each other at various locations. People were in a cruising mood.

Maybe the top was cut off to fix a bad chop. They may have not wanted to move the firewall back and added to the front to get things to fit. Who really knows?
