Hydra Boost Options ?

Hi all just curious as to Hydra Boost options, what are the best donor vehicles to rob from as I want to upgrade my 1970 c10, is cooling required? does it work well with front disc, rear drum or better suited for 4 wheel disc
TIA

Re: Hydra Boost Options ?

Works great on my 1972 GMC C20 with disc/drum. More room, good pedal feel, no vacuum issue. Not using a cooler and does not seem to need one. Capacity of stock pump reservoir is just barely enough. Hose kit off ebay works great. Everything you need. The plate off ebay also nice. For the price worth it unless you have the scrape and ability to drill/cut the 4 mounting and large center hole. You do not need the lever offset that come in the kits.
As for boost unit, going new is a nice piece of mind unless you find a good used. The only other thing you need to figure out is the rod and connectors for the pedal connection. All in all a very easy conversion once you get all the needed stuff.
Sorry, I went new, so donor info I do not have.

I’m curious!
Why a hydroboost?
How much vacuum does your motor produce?

Re: Hydra Boost Options ?

Square body 1 ton from77-81 should get you all the parts you need and is still American fittings are still American.

I used modified lines from a square body, and the actual hydroboost unit from an 09 silverado. The I used a stock master and pump both for a 72 K20 which my truck is. That and the hydraulic clutch are the two best changes I’ve made. I can lock the 35’s up on my truck with no issue if I want and it has excellent feel. In my opinion it is superior to vacuum boosters in every significant way.
Captain fab on here sells the firewall plate for a reasonable price. I used that along with his hydraulic clutch kit on mine.(the clutch master mount is built into the hydraboost plate when you get that kit)

Here is how I did mine using the hydroboost unit from a 2001 Chevy Van. Front disks and rear drums.

Sometimes it’s not just because of low vacuum.
-cleans up under the hood.
-gives more clearance to pull valve covers off. (Tall deck BBC)
-nice custom look can be had with aftermarket kits.

And it works a hell of a lot better than even the best vacuum setup.

Re: Hydra Boost Options ?

Only thing my hydroboost trucks have been good for is making a giant mess.
And dont get me started about rebuilt unit.
My crewcab obs kicks the pedal back at you if youre turning and applying the brake.
Not a fan.
Vacuum or manual for me.

Just swapped our square crewcab to vaccum too.

Re: Hydra Boost Options ?

I bought a rebuilt unit off Amazon from Cardone. I think it was from a GM truck around 2001-2005. I had to flip it upside down to clear the valve cover, but it was no big deal. A local hydraulic shop made me some of the lines.

It has worked flawlessly for 4 years now.

Re: Hydra Boost Options ?

Rather than spend time scrounging the junk yards and trying to piece together the brackets, pedal rods etc. I opted to buy a vehicle specific kit for my '67 C10
I bought it while gathering parts for the build.
It came with a new Bosch unit, master cylinder, bracket, and rod for the pedal as well as the proportioning valve.
I swapped to front disc with factory 73+ calipers , and added drilled and slotted 1¼" thick rotors.
I kept the rear drum brakes, and I have to say, the braking is incredible!
Pedal feel is firm and solid and the braking is smooth, responsive, and very proportional to input from the brake pedal.
I couldn't be happier with the setup!
I painted it to match the body color and mounted the cruise module right above it.

Re: Hydra Boost Options ?

Classic Performance Products recently released an electric booster that we installed on our C10 and it works amazing! It's super simple to hook up and it doesn't have the extra hoses that a hydroboost needs and it's more compact than a vacuum booster. The picture on the right is what it looks like installed in our truck.

Re: Hydra Boost Options ?

I used a hydro boost kit supplied by Hydratech. They supplied all the parts for my 66 Mustang project. Great unit and great tech support. Not touchy but would put your nose up against the wind shield. 2002 Camaro master. Wilwood prop valve.
I would not buy any parts from any company that doesn't have great tech support.

Re: Hydra Boost Options ?

For Hydra Boost, some of the best donor vehicles are usually late-model GM trucks or SUVs since their setups fit well with older C10s. Cooling isn’t usually a must, but if you’re running heavy braking or towing, adding a cooler can help keep things reliable. Hydra Boost works great with front disc and rear drum brakes, but it’s even better if you go with 4-wheel discs for more consistent stopping power.
