So what was #1 anyway? 100,001? did they begin with the 100 thousand beginning or 10 thousand beginning?

Re: Attn 66 owners looking for the 1 st and last 66 built
Probably a really bad time to bring this up - but - the plants don't necessarily build in strict VIN order. Most plants have the ability to shuffle builds after the body shop and before paint, and then again after paint and before entering the trim/final line area. That allows for extended repairs in the body shop or for work load leveling downstream (ie, can't have too many manual trans trucks in a row, can't have too many 4wd in a row, can't have too many A/C trucks in a row, etc) as well as for an accumulator (or "bank") to draw from to keep the final line running in the event of a breakdown or work stoppage in body or paint (which was frequent).
Although the serial portion of the VIN is assigned sequentially it doesn't really mean anything. It's a serial number. The true build sequence is described by the General Assembly sequence number, which is not preserved outside the assembly plant (unless you have the assembly line build sheet - which exist only in the vehicle, if at all, and was not kept by GM). A good analogy comes from back when people would pay their bills by writing checks. You pull the checks in sequence (typically) but they don't clear the bank in sequence (typically). K

Re: Attn 66 owners looking for the 1 st and last 66 built
A bit late but I'm also adding the generic info packet for 1966 full size trucks from the GM heritage center archives:
