Easiest Automatic Swap

My 64 C10 is currently running a 230 inline 6 with 3 on the tree.

Manuals are fun and 3 on the tree is a cool nostalgic touch but as I'm getting older I'm realizing I would prefer something that just lets me cruise without dealing with a manual. I live in an area with a LOT of hills so that kind of sucks to LOL.

It would also allow my wife to drive/enjoy the truck which can only help me right!!!

Is there an auto that i could swap in without the need to modify the drive shaft?

A TH350 would probably be your best bet given power levels and length, but at nearly 24" in length versus the length of your 3 speed only being about 16 inches, you are going to have 8 inches to figure out. Even the PowerGlide available in the '60's was longer - by about half an inch with the shortshaft version.

Re: Easiest Automatic Swap

I second the Turbo 350. I know the overdrive trannys are very popular, but I just love simplicity. I've had friends do the 700R4 but they really didn't like it as well as they thought they would. Some found the gear spacing to be awkward and others just burned them up because of faulty cable adjustment or straight up abuse... A turbo 350 just "takes a licking and keeps on ticking ."

Edit: BTW, you will also need to remove the crossmember for the cast iron bellhousing and install a tranny crossmember further back for the tailshaft of the automatic. This will also include reseting the tailshaft to pinion angle for the driveline and running a tranny cooler and lines too.

I think that 8" is the bellhousing so total length should be about the same as the TH350. Plus the motor mount towers can be moved.

Re: Easiest Automatic Swap

TH200-4R would be a good choice. Shorter than the 700.
