Very cool truck OP, not sure if I missed it but why did you not use that beauty of a small block? How come you decided to LS instead?

The small block has been in the truck since my dad bought it back in 94. With the exception of some carb work, the motor has never been opened up in all those years except recently for just new gaskets and being painted. After all the work that has been done with the truck, I didnt want to finally get it back on the road and then the motor crap out. So I decided to go the LS route for "hopefully" longevity and reliability.

I have a 4.8L in a 2003 Tahoe C/1500. 301K miles. Still runs smooth. I bought that truck in March of '24 at 297K. Since I'm not sure about their durability, I'm babying it on the freeway -- running at around 75 MPH until I trust it more or learn the lore of these motors. Tahoe's a big chassis for a 4.8, even in 4x2.
PO told me she didn't like the gas mileage. About 13 City.
That was before I got the A/C working. With A/C on mileage is out the window.
New [to me] truck,
New Tricks.

Re: Fathers 68 stepside overhaul

I cant imagine the MPG's being great on this truck either lol.. But My Bronco gets about 14.. So I guess I am numb to mpgs. I dont think its uncommon for some of these LS motors to go for 2-300k miles.. I personally would want to go thru it before that kinda mileage but... I think this one had somewhere around 60-80k on it when it was pulled.
