Woodgrain Removal
I bought a new ( Repopped) tailgate band and want to take off the woodgrain decal. I'm thinking of polishing it or painting it semigloss black. What's the best way to get the woodgrain decal off? I have a heatgun or does 3m stripe remover work better. Any suggestions or pics of tailgate bands with woodgrain removed would be a great help. Thanks.

I think I simplyu peeled mine off and used a razor blade on the tough spots...just left it in the Tx sun untill it gave me 2nd degree burns when I toughed it and then started peeling.
It's been a few years though, I may not remember using some strong chemical or something. |

Mine was petrified to the metal. I tried using a razor blade , didnt get very far. tried using paint stripper, didnt work.I popped the letters off and used a medium - fine grit sanding disc on a 3/8 drill and it did the trick. just have to be careful and not gouge the soft metal.I am going to get a new decal to go over mine soon.

sorry not to change the topic but franko I see on your web page you have dual aux saddle gas tanks, are these from the factory? cause I have them too, well at least what I can see of yours is the same on my truck. anymore pics?..... just caught me off guard I always figured whoever used my truck for a camper truck had them put in.

I used a heat gun. Worked pretty well. Used a razor scraper in conjunction with the heat gun. Mineral spirits once cooled a little. I'm not sure how you're going to get around the letters though. Maybey you could exacto around the edge of the letters and scrape up to them??? I replaced my letters at the same time I peeled the old stuff off.

Thanks Guy's, I just took it out of the box to see how the letters are attached. Glad it's a GMC and there is only three letters. They are held on with speed nuts. They look pretty easy to take off. I think I will go with the heat gun then polish it on my polishing wheel with some rouge.
