They are chromed plastic, but plastic nonetheless. Makes it difficult for the speed nuts to cut a thread into without slippage.

I bought an array of Dorman branded speed nuts at O'Reilly once upon a time
I get push nuts from the Hillman aisle of my local Ace Hardware. They have speed nuts too.
This is known as the aisle of Gawdammi+s, in deference to my uncle who named annoying and elusive fasteners that way

thanks for the tips, I just may visit the aisle of Gawdammi+s also before opting to buy the pot metal version of the letters.

Big thanks to Dwayne! What a helpful and considerate guy. The template he made was the perfect thing to let me confidently find the existing holes that were years under at least 2 colors of paint and body, haha. I think it turned out perfect
