GM Key Blanks

My Dad’s 87 GMC had two sets of keys from the factory. My wife drove the truck yesterday and bent one ignition key, which was the main one Dad had been using all this time. It was thin. I want another ignition key that’s a GM blank. I see they’re readily available on eBay.

My question is does it matter which blank?

The ones we have are silver. The keys we had for the 90 GMC we had were black.

Can I buy a wrong blank?

Look close at your key, there should be a small letter stamped in the key, that is you blank you want to buy, they have different patterns. At least that is the way for my 79

Re: GM Key Blanks

Thank you. It does have a small “C” stamped on it. The door key has a “D” stamped on it.

Now I know.

Re: GM Key Blanks

I used to be able to walk into a GM dealership and have them cut a new key cut with a key cutter. Factory keys are punched out using a key cutter instead of using a key grinder.
Don't know if GM dealerships still cut keys like they used to, A key cutter makes a much smoother cut so it does not wear out the lock tumblers like a ground key.

Silver is correct for '87.
