Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
Ordered the Classic Update harness from AAW. All the wiring is a birdsnest even though it was redone at some point.
Rear wheel well gaps filled in and notch cover fitted as well. This was over the weekend. Also tuned the carb with a vacuum guage. |

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
Noco charger desulfated my battery in about 4h, then charged it fully. Last night it cranked long enough for the bowl to fill and the engine to start and run briefly(and badly) ;-)
This morning I get to do points-->timing-->choke-->figure out how I screwed up the Quadrajunk

LOve it. If I had a garage door, I could use one like that.

Gonna go ahead and rebuild since I already had the supply line off to check the filter and I have a kit sitting around. Noticed one of the bowl drains is weeping, so going to redo that first

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
Rebuilt my carb this afternoon, then while making dinner, realized I never measured the float height
Since it's still on the bench, I'll just open it up again. IF it were on the truck, I'd roll the dice ;-)

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
Drove it. It's been a couple of weeks, and it needed to be driven. I put an Edelbrock AVS2 on it awhile back, as the Q-Jet was just worn out. The E-brock needs calibration, and the kit is on the way. I really would've liked to use another Q-Jet, but where would one find another calibrated unit, or parts thereof?

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
Can't buy a new Q-Jet these days. I worked in a parts store back in the '70s, and they sold new carburetors. But they were just a generic replacement, and couldn't possibly have been calibrated for every vehicle. Anyway, neither is the Edelbrock, but I can do that with the kit. I'll play it by ear, but I could go with an O2 sensor to get it right.

Saw this one recently about an AVS2: https://youtu.be/gdvBgIt4LEg
(he really isn't hating on Holleys, btw, it's a joke)

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
Nice looking grille! I bought a new one to get rid of the butchered '72(?) grille that was in my truck. Delivered to the wrong address (found it), and when I got it out of the box, it had a DENT in it. I didn't want to deal with all the return to vendor biz, because I'd possibly get something worse. I dinged it out with a metal working hammer and called it "good".

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
NJ and CA have a lot of regulations. Not many places here do hex chrome because of the trouble it caused, ala "Erin Brokovich". That was a bad case of chemical poisoning for those people, but was caused by uncaring people. Done right, hex chrome could still be used, it just needed engineering controls. I worked in aerospace, and hex chrome was all over the place with things like waveguides for communication systems. I worked in MILSATCOM for many years. The plated aluminum waveguides used later were orders of magnitude cheaper than the coin silver waveguides we used on the earlier systems.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
Popped the lid off the carb and adjusted the float level I had forgotten to check
Put it back together without the block, so got to do that again, almost forgot the AP that time. Looked for the filter housing for 5m before I found it screwed onto the front of the carb of all places Wrote the steps on my carb stand in pink Sharpie My Pertronix Ignitor II and coil arrived today, but for the safety of all concerned, I left them in the box ;-)
