The wife's 68 GMC

This thread will be for my wife's "new to her" truck. When she was a little girl, her family had a '67 Chevy C-20 camper truck. She spent a few years trying to decide what she wanted that would be CLOSE to what her family had when she was younger. The more she saw the GMC 4 headlight front ends, the more she liked it.
This photo is when we cannonballed from Oshkosh WI to Gwinner ND and back, in the same day. She could not wipe the smile off of her face the whole trip! Not only is this going to be HER truck, she wants to be actively involved in the work, not just a "flashlight holder".

Re: The wife's 68 GMC

Here's a quick couple of pictures. The GMC is parked in her warm shop for the winter.
The wife is doing a compression test.

Re: The wife's 68 GMC

I forgot to mention in the original post that this truck sat for 20 years before we bought it.
Besides vacuuming out 20 years worth of mouse poop, in the few short weeks since we bough it we -
Replaced the tires
HD shocks in all 4 corners
New drum brakes in all 4 corners
Relocated the fuel tank (picture to follow tonight, possible)
Tune up
New battery and cables

Great looking patina on that truck.

I hope the compression test has good results.

Yes sir, 145-152. It's not the original motor, the truck had a 6 in it. A previous owner put in a 73 Chevy 350.

Nice, I like the 67-68 GMC, the sloped hood looks good with the 4 headlights!

Good luck, Rg

Thanks! Isn't funny how it's those little things that draw us in to certain years?

Yes it is, I like all the 67-72 GM trucks but the 67-68 design is near flawless to me (with the exception of the front drum brakes, I always put disc in). Disc and power steering make these closer to a more modern truck and more fun to drive.

Good luck, Rg

Cool truck and cool that your wife is into it.
It looks pretty clean, especially for your part of the country.

I totally agree with you. My 67 Cutlass had power steering and power (drum) brakes. The first year, I got everything working and driving safely. Then the following year, I put disc brakes in the front. I'll be doing the same thing with the wife's truck...currently it has power steering and manual drum brakes. I am working on getting everything working and driving safely and then down the road (next year?) I'll put power brakes (with discs in the front).

I think she is MORE excited than me, which is cool!
We got the truck from ND. It had sat for 20 years. I stumbled across it on a YouTube Channel, of all places. LOL

Re: The wife's 68 GMC

Do yourself a favor and convert to front disc brakes. They make a 6 lug conversion, so you won't have to do anything to the rear. Your 6 lug rally wheels will work with that conversion.
The stock 6 lug wheels that some on the 69 and earlier will not work with a disc conversion
Carry On!!!
Job well done!!!

Thank you for the heads up! The rims are from a square body GM, I think they are stamped from 84.

Re: The wife's 68 GMC

We did the gas tank relocation this last weekend.
Don't mind the vent line hanging there, I haven't finalized the location yet.

Re: The wife's 68 GMC

Will a wood bed be reinstalled?

Or something custom made?

Great question! Yes, definitely a wood bed again. That's a little down the road so I'm keeping an open mind (and eye) to anything I see online, to get some ideas. I had thought about putting green treat plywood down for this year and then doing it "right" next year, but I'm not sure yet.

New drum brakes installed. The wife was grinning the whole time she was in the driveway.

What is next on the list?

There are a couple things that we are going to do today and then the project is on pause because Friday I'm having rotator cuff and biceps tendon surgery.
When I'm recovering, the wife will be working on recovering the seat, wiring and who knows what else she feels trying. Since I'll have the time on my hands, I'll review and revise our "To Do" list.

Re: The wife's 68 GMC

This is her truck.
Earlier this month, before we bought the truck, I had stumbled across this video on YT when I was going down the 67-72 C-10 rabbit hole of videos. LOL Mortske is a pretty cool guy. What you see in the video is what he's like in person. We hung out for about 1.5 hours just shooting the breeze about any and everything.
