What type of air-cleaner is this and what for?

In searching for air cleaners I have seen a few pics of the original large OE air cleaners with the snorkel / horn on them and a smaller lid in it usually chrome that just covers the filter. The one in this pic is all I could find right now. Is this a new style, mod thing or is this an old concept and thing that is making a comeback. Does it have a purpose like keeping the incoming air cooler and acting as a heat shield?

Also which way should the intake snorkel / horn face on a BB OE air cleaner. I have seen both but the repair manual and other pics it is pointing towards the passenger side

That's an interesting air cleaner. I doubt it would draw any air through the horn.

Those had a sealing rubber ring around the outside.
The seal contacted the under hood on a cowl induction hood.
Like on a chevelle.

The snorkel position is dependent on the little bump out on the air cleaner. That bump out is for distributor clearance. On the pic the bump out is on the left. The snorkel would point to the passenger side.

IMO that was fairly common mod back in the day to get more air in the engine. I would bet the lid is a aftermarket lid
Sometimes folks would take the stock lid and just turn it upside down and put it back on for the same affect.

That is a cowl induction air cleaner as mentioned above. But it is missing the top piece that the rubber seal attaches to. It is near identical to the one on my 69 Camaro.

An naturally aspirated gas engine is a giant air pump = more air in more power out and that is of course how blowers work by forcing air in.

I have a couple of stickers that add at least .005 hp

Re: What type of air-cleaner is this and what for?

I bought the pictured air cleaner for my 4BBL QJet 350 when first got my truck 10 years go. The spec is for a 1972 Z28 Camaro and it fits the truck perfectly. I haven't looked in a while but could be still available. I believe I bought it from Summit. I put the decal on it so matches what was on the factory one. i just liked the look of the same size dual snorkels.

It is when properly ducted to a cowl induction hood. My Camaro went from 13.20’s to 12.70’s in the quarter with the cowl induction setup. This in Texas in the summer when ambient temps were in the low 100’s.

It is still available. I purchased one for my 427 that is going into my ‘69 short step. It was for 70-72 LT-1 Z/28’s

In this case, yes. Buick made a kit for cold air induction from the cowl to the air cleaner in '68. Not as good as cowl induction, but good for a solid .1 in the 1/4. But the air cleaner pictured isn't configured like a cowl induction.
