1966 GMC Sports Cab Trim

Here’s a recent project I just finished. Bought this a couple years ago and decided it was time to get it back on the road. Incredibly clean rust free 1966 GMC 1002 built in Pontiac Mi. Very unique truck with the Sports Cab Trim option. It also has the 351E V6 and power Glide transmission, power steering and power brakes Custom Cab and big back window . Started life in Neosho Missouri from the Griffith Motor Company. Within 2 years it moved to California and then parked for the last 20 years between California and Arizona. I bought it in 2024 from the original owners brother.

Started by cleaning the interior and brought back the original paint color Red from its sun baked fade . Brakes, tune up tires complete fuel system clean. Rebuilt everything on the power steering and rebuilt brake booster Runs great!

Firewall markings Show the Sports Trim option, PG for power glide, Custom , Comfort option , Tinted Windshield and a few others. You can also see how faded the red paint was when it was on the trailer being delivered. Paint was like chalk , much of it rubbed off by hand and had light surface rust.

Some pictures of the floor with seat and carpet removed. No rust at all in the usual places. Also the engine compartment prior to cleaning. Still has all of its original GMC part numbered fan belts, heater hoses and clamps etc Just a nice complete original truck.

How in the world did an original belt make it this long?

What did you do to bring back the paint?

The belt , not really sure, thicker than normal Chevrolet belts of the same generation? Not really sure, lol.

Paint, well basically I had to wet sand it because buffing at first in a small area did nothing for the color. It was orange- like with just buffing so I experimented with different wet sanding paper and eventually used 600 , then a foam pad and medium grit compound. Around the windshield and wiper grill I just used linseed oil because even 1000 grit just took the paint off. Good enough. Paint is just to far gone but it now matches the original tail gate red . Tail gate was off and stored inside most of its life.

Re: 1966 GMC Sports Cab Trim

My truck has that same orange look to the old red paint. I don't plan on painting the entire truck right now. Just want to get it back on the road. But, I would like to bring the paint back a little bit like the red on your truck.

Re: 1966 GMC Sports Cab Trim

I just emerged from the Rabbit Hole of Chevy Badging!
Like, what is the difference between a Rally "Sport" (appearance); "Sport" Cab (appearance); and Super "Sports" (performance focus)? That all said, I love the look of the truck, and its scarcity makes it even cooler! While I would be remiss to add an appearance packages to any vehicle I was ordering, I would snatch up rare arrangements on the used market in a heartbeat as it seems they lose the premium price hike that comes with these packages when new that is always more than its worth for me and results in you getting 100% of the cool look they provide without the cost.

In this case the basic code 1846 truck exterior has the Custom Cab appearance option. The "Sports Cab Trim" option has to do ONLY with the interior items like this one has as the padded door panels and what was later termed the Buddy Bucket seat etc . I post a picture of everything included with this option above. Rally Sport refers to Camaros and Super sport chevrolet cars. Later 67 up I believe is when Sports became part of a model of truck .
