Rear Axle Swap
This is probally a crazy idea, but Im a little crazy as well. Does anybody know if it would be possible to swap a rear end out of a 56 chevrolet 2 ton truck, under my 58 chevy's pickup frame? This would probally take alot of work if possible...I was just wondering if it is even possible to do?

since no one is biting on this I might as well give it a go...

Problems I see are width of the axle. Unless you are going with a flatbed. The other option that might work with a stepside bed is fiberglass "3 inch wider" rear fenders. Getting that axle shortened could cost prohibitive. The other thing would be the wheels. Didn't all the 2 tons come with duallys? Knowing that you have an heavy front you could also swap in the front axle. A low slung dually would be interesting What are you trying to accomplish? BTW, crazy ideas are like ingenuity, the mother of invention. |

What im trying to accomplish is having a lower rear end for pulling. I know you may say "why not just change the rear end gears and beef up the rear end you have". The bigger, heavier rear end would help out with traction (it being heavier...putting more weight on the rear tires). Plus the 2 ton rear end is free....its down here in my grandpa's junkyard.
Far as the width of the axle, Ive thought about that also. And I had thought about what you said before too. Extend the rear fenders a couple of inches. The wheels would have to be worked out. Id have to find some 10 lug 16's...or custom make my own. 2 reasons I wouldnt use the ones that are on the rear end. #1 they are 20 inch. #2 they are 2 piece, with the dangerous ring.

One thing to consider before going too far with this idea is parts availability.
Make a few calls to see if you can get replacement drums, shoes, bearings, etc.. |

Ive also thought about keeping my truck the way it is, use it on a more daily basis....and put another body on the 2 ton chassis, and rebuild its engine (235). Only problem with that is I dont have the money right now. I have extra cabs, fenders, hoods and all...but they would all need some work and I dont have the money to work on those yet. Would be nice to have it for a winter rig, or for towing....and still have my truck for road use tho.
