Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Loaded up the engine and drove it to the builder. It will be a few months, but it’s gonna be great when I get it back. In the meantime I am going to rebuild the transmission and paint the engine bay.

Went to install my Pertronix Ignitor II, but bogged down a bit when the vac advance can was no good

TIL there's a capacitor hiding behind the coil. I found nothing about it in the Service Manual(nor the coil either), but it's mentioned in the Assembly Manual

Capacitor is for ignition noise suppression. Without it you might hear a TIC, TIC from your spark plugs firing on your AM Radio, CB Rig or 8-Track.

That's what I figgered. Jeep CoP packs have this kind o' system
I may be dense, but the Service Manual has zip about ignition coils, let alone RF noise suppression

I've had a smell of gas in the cab for the past week. Pulled the seat out and found a cracked vent hose. Cab smells great now. Good incentive to vacuum under the seat also!

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

I moved my '71 GMC Jimmy K/1500 back about five feet to get the cherry picker in place to give a slight lift to the engine block. The Header on the Drivers Side needs to come off for sandblasting and paint, but the Z-Bar has not cooperated and remains stuck between the frame bracket and the block -- trapping the header tubes.
My Buddy, Fred Gibson, came over and together we could budge it back 2 feet, but ran into inertia or an upslope. He cheated by bringing his '13 Silverado up and tugging it a few feet more. Now I maneuvered the cherry picker into place. The unit is tall, and getting a pick on the engine may get close. Hoping I don't have to pull the Hood off. Mission creep has already mushroomed up from a simple Starter R&R. Jacking the front end up again may give better clearance and underneath access.
Freddy -- an old hand at Chevy hot rodding -- saw a crack in the rubber of my Passenger Side Motor Mount. I shot a pic for more opinions.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

One night last week(after I had consumed a certain amount of liquid Jameson wisdom), I ordered a Pertronix relay kit after failing to find a reliable source for Series 56 blades. I had forgotten when it showed up, but sure.
Today I put the dizzy back in with a shiny new vac advance, then wasted 30m drilling a hole in the fender for.....reasons(stone cold sober this time, I swear)
Mounted the relay, and after I had cut the 12V+ wire to fit beautifully, I realized the coil and ignition wires were too short to reach :-|

Got the Pertronix trigger+coil+relay+diode done. I'm not good at soldering, but the gods were kind today, now all I can smell is pine pitch

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Spent a while chasing a contact on my Pertronix relay socket I had reseated poorly
I was sidetracked by a 320mV reading off the resistor wire, but since there's enough Volts to trip the test light and click the relay, that's gotta be wrong. Maybe that's an artifact of digital MM?

Good practice remaining patient, and methodical, and somewhat sane

That's a great alternator! I put one in my 67 Cutlass last year and will be putting one in my wife's 68 GMC this spring.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

after reading through some build threads I am subscribed to I finally allowed myself to be motivated by them THANK YOU...maybe feeling I needed to kick start my own A$$..and looking for some alone time in the garage... so here we go today I repositioned the frame on the jack stands removed the rear sway bar, rear coils and disconnected the shocks laid it down on the bump stops( a suggestion from another board member to simulate full weight of bed or hitting a bump to determine clearance ) . I checked the level of my garage floor and then leveled the frame. My wife called me for dinner next time I get the chance will get the fuel tank back under to check clearance for final fitment

Well, I started pulling fenders to do door hinge pin replacements, and now I'm doing unscheduled rust repair. First time doing rust repair like this. Hopefully it will get easier with practice. Right side is not so bad.... left will be more work...

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Getting deep into my engine swap. Out with the old 283. Original engine and revived it after a 15 year slumber about six years ago when I got the truck. Have put about 4000 miles on the old 283 but she's tired. Doesn't smoke but lots of blowby and gets rid of 1 to 1.5 quarts of oil every tank of gas.
