Incredible deal for someone 72 C20 w/Cayo camper

This seems like an incredible deal for someone. It’s in Michigan. Check the link

https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/f...ilar_cars=true

Is this 503 green?

Re: Incredible deal for someone 72 C20 w/Cayo camper

Very cool setup and you’re right, at $20k I bet someone would pay that for just the truck, or the camper separately.

Rivets on the VIN plate look like regular old hardware store, not rosette though. Might be some shenanigans afoot, for fair warning. Could be it was just taken off for an honest repaint too with no ill intent.

Just saw it and wanted to share.

Re: Incredible deal for someone 72 C20 w/Cayo camper

Yes, very cool and probably a very good deal.

I have to ask though, if advertising as appearing to be all original, why would a 70 have the 71/72 grille?

It's probably a VIN tag from a different truck. As noted above doesn't have rosette rivets.

I think instead of being a good deal this is going to become somebody's headache.

Everything about that truck is 72
Except the vin tag

Screws in doors
Vent above vin tag
Door panels
Grill
Badging
Etc etc

That being said, looks to be clean
But still not worth asking price in my opinion

Wasn't thinking that way, but yes, vin swap...

Yep, 72 all the way. Had to go back and take a look after WorldsCrappiestTruck pointed out the rivets

I'd sure like to see it in person, no pic of the SPID of course. Looks like a repaint, that green is more of a Task Force color... but lighting in photos is relative.

I think it has been revinned, and if you are going to (somehow legally) re-vin a 72, you should at the very least do it with a 72 vin. There is a lot to scare a guy away, but nonetheless pretty intriguing. I love those campers.

Wow!! Too bad. It looks like a nice 72 and camper. I wouldn't touch it with the vin swap though. Definitely not worth the asking price as is. Some one will buy it.

I'd bet this is the same combo that was listed for sale somewhere else.

Re: Incredible deal for someone 72 C20 w/Cayo camper

Those GVW plates with the sharp edges often get snagged on clothes and pop out, probably just a quick repair to re install it. Far from a "salvage job" special. IMO, originally had the P03 chrome hubcaps, notorious for denting, splitting cracking. Why, rear hubcaps are argent silver, '69 only, front left is a '73-'78, has concave center with a bowtie color change from gold to blue. A SPID photo would be nice.

Cayo campers are amongst the best of the best, truck looks very solid, IMO, to the right person, price is very fair for the combo.

The VIN is also stamped on top of the frame below the cab. Use a mirror to check or use some modeling clay to make an impression.

This thread got to me to thinking about my truck. I had to run out and check the vin on it just to be sure it had the rosette rivets. Whew! I'm good. Lol!

I disagree. The vin is clearly a 1970 truck…and the body of the truck very much presents itself as a 1972, from the door jamb vent down to the glue-on rear view mirror. Yes, all this stuff could technically be added to a 1970 truck to make it look like a 1972 but Occam's Razor - the simplest explanation, requiring the fewest assumptions, is usually the best or most likely to be true.

1972 (likely without a title) gets a tiled 1970 VIN tag slapped on and hopes for an naive buyer….

The SPID would also answer the 503 or 518 paint debate. I'll go with 518 light Green.

Very true about the SPID. Probably would show a VIN starting with CCE and not that mess on the VIN plate it displays. Probably a reason why they didn't show the SPID or destroyed it. According to that other link, the VIN has been wrong since 1983.

No 503 color code for 72 for 10-30 trucks. In 71 it was called Medium Green 518 like my short bed in my Avatar. 72 Changed the name to Meadow Green 518, although depending on what plant made it could have come out as still Medium Green 518 for 72. 1970 shows no 503 (10-30 series) either, but 529 Medium Green. Can't validate 1969, but the last historical document I have says 1968 Had 503 Light Green (10-30 Trucks). I shot that color on my stepside. This info is the recommended color codes as per the Data Books.

But in 1970, you could get a Van in 503 Light Green as a recommended color. It would be the last year for this color shade/name in the Data Books. No Light Green available in 1971 for Vega's, Vans, El Camino's, Trucks (All series) and Suburban's.

Re: Incredible deal for someone 72 C20 w/Cayo camper

I'm a green fan, and have always been somewhat baffled by the variations over the years and what "later" year RPOs were simply "earlier" year paints that may have changed codes but not actual mixes over the years. Weird little things like 505 Dark Green, originally a 67-69 color that made a comeback in 72 - yet its 67-69 medium green companion, 503, didn't make a comback in 72 and was replaced with 518. It's worth noting that the 70 codes, like 529, are poly/metallics and are a noticeably different shade from the other sea of non-metallic greens as they also have blue added in.
Here's my "understanding" (I use the term loosely) of the greens across the 67-72 era (olives are another story.. not included here)

1967-69: 503 (Light Green) and 505 (Dark Green)
1970: 512 (Dark Green-poly, aka Dark Blue-Green) and 529 (Medium Green-poly, aka Medium Blue Green)
1971-72: 518 (Medium Green, aka Meadow Green) and 505 (Dark Green, aka Glenwood Green)
