Re: Old Yeller 4x4 upgrade

I ordered a silicone Trans pan gasket for the 700R from Moroso and it seems to be a good choice. I put it in yesterday but it got too hot for me to put the fluid in. I have a drain plug on the pan that has a plastic seal. I want to change the gasket out for aluminum maybe before I put the fluid in. Just a thought. Not exactly sure where my leak was coming from as the rubber gasket I removed was not in that bad of shape and was not split. I know I have a leak at the speedo cable but that is further down the line and obvious. Gonna try some seals for the 205 speedo output soon.

Re: Old Yeller 4x4 upgrade

Well I got the wrong seals for my speedo output on the NP205. I will get the smaller ones and try that. I have the bigger ones for free to whoever wants them. I am also getting the brackets to install the Sanden Compressor for the A/C sorted out while she is down. I already have a new A/C line kit and the crimper on the shelf as well as the cross flow condenser. I may also upgrade the evaporator to the 1973 up style. Don't know. I did also acquire some 1973 ish Stock hubcaps. Those Dana 60 fronts were expensive. Now I am searching for Stock Steelies to fit them so I can lower this beast back down a little.

Re: Old Yeller 4x4 upgrade

Welcome to the site! Yeah I saw those. They are nice but expensive. I was thinking more like some used Furd Van wheels. Cheap and 7" wide. I am eventually going to bring this truck back down to earth and 10? wheels might look weird. I am getting older and this might be my old grandpa truck.

Re: Old Yeller 4x4 upgrade

Well I bought a new property and it flooded pretty good with Hurricane Helene. There is no house there yet so no losses. This may end up being my high water rescue vehicle.

I think I have a small leak at the rear main seal. Guess I am going in for that soon. I may wait til I move.

Re: Old Yeller 4x4 upgrade

So I have not done much to the truck except fixing the small leaks. It still runs awesome but I need to replace the tires. They look fine but are 2010 Goodyears. I toy with the idea of selling it someday but then I start it up and the feeling goes away. I need to paint it. I bought a 60 gallon compressor for painting it but now I need all the materials. I was goint to take the body lift off of it but it seem as though I need to notch a rear bed brace for the fuel tank that's now under the bed.35-40 gallon tank I think.

Re: Old Yeller 4x4 upgrade

So I drove the beast about 40 miles over the weekend. I trusted the old 2010 Goodyears and they held up fine. I had to put it in storage at the parents house while I moved into my new rental. I am renting while my house is being built. It has 6 Honda mini bikes in the back as well as a full LQ9 LS and floor jacks etc. It's squatting pretty bad. I have a spare and Hagerty insurance for the roadside. I am surprised at the snappy acceleration compared to my 2014. I love that little / big block grunt. I have to put some stands under it to relieve the springs before it stays that way. Pics to come.

Is this truck a big block or a small block? The little / big block grunt comment is throwing me off.

I do agree, my 2016 5.3 is kinda sluggish. I have heavier offroad tires so I was thinking that was causing it. It seems that the 5.3 likes to downshift a gear or two, where my 1970 307 seems to handle the hills a little better. 4.10's might help too

Re: Old Yeller 4x4 upgrade

It is a 400 Small block bored .30 over to a 406. It's a bit neglected but still running great. I also have the 4.10 gears. The 2014 is most likely going to 3.73 with a trac lok. I just don't trust Gov bomb and 3.42 gears aren't bad but while I'm in there and tuning anyway...

Cleaning the trans tune up on the 2014 will help quite a bit as well. Trucks looks great by the way! Nice to see the old ones still putting the work in!

Re: Old Yeller 4x4 upgrade

I am really interested in your experience with the trans tune if have done that. I believe mine is all screwed up. I think my converter might even be locking up at idle now and then. making it run rough.

Re: Old Yeller 4x4 upgrade

I just tuned my Camaro SS on my own, I should say I’ve got the base tune about down but still making some refinements as I see areas I want to improve on. It makes a huge difference, there’s a lot of stupid, lazy, programming in them from the factory. It wouldn’t surprise me if you’ve got a low rpm lockup. I use HP tuners with the MPVI 4 interface. Once you get to playing with it, it’s pretty easy to figure out with some common sense. I’m very much still learning.

As it sits I tuned out all converter slip, added the shift timing tables from BLUE CAT, upped the up shift sensitivity all the way (think how much throttle it takes to trigger the down shift) removed lock up in all gears except 5-6. Sped the shift times(think time it actually takes to make the shift) up quite a bit and added some line pressure to further firm things up. I also tuned out the AFM, speed limiter and rear o2’s amongst other things.
I set mine up so the aggressive trans tune is only present in sport mode so in Drive it acts like it did for the most part from the factory. That way when momma drives it I don’t have to worry about it getting away from her or her seeing just how rowdy that car is getting lol.

There’s a ton of info on the net about tuning the 6L80/90 transmissions.

Does removing the lock up help with the torque converter issues? I have a 2016 GMC K1500 so I don't have the sport mode, just trailering. I do have some weird/lousy shifting from time to time. When I'm driving on back roads in the winter I only drive in trailering mode because it always seems to shift right when you gain momentum going up the hill. I've done the AFM delete but I don't know that I would be against tuning the transmission, too.

It definitely can help with the shudder that they get, I know on the 6 speeds there’s as much as 40-50 rpm slip built into the tune, so in a lot of conditions you’ve got any where from 5-50 rpm’s worth of slip going on pretty much all the time. By zeroing it out you will negate pretty much all of that. The problem can be that after a certain point the converter is already worn from slipping for thousands of miles and the tune won’t be able to really help until you replace the converter. I wouldn’t hesitate to tune it if were you. It makes a huge improvement in drivability.
