64-66 Door Paint separation?

Does anyone have pictures of original 64-66 truck doors

I'm wanting to know how the paint was separated from the exterior color to the interior color?

I cant seem to find any great pictures which shows the front of the door hinge side, but any pictures or information would be greatly appreciated?

Thanks

Re: 64-66 Door Paint separation?

Thanks but I can find plenty of latch side of the doors Im mainly looking for the hinge side of the door.

I have seen some that seems to be painted body color on the hinge side, but I cant find anything that is really clear and can clarify if body color was painted on the hinge side or if they were interior color like the latch, face, bottom and tops all seem to be interior color

mainly interested in how they were originally painted, looking to do mine as it was done

The hinge side on mine seemed to be body colored overspray on the interior color. The truck had what I believed was original aqua colored paint. Sorry no pic of the door jam but as you can see, it looked like the original paintjob.

Re: 64-66 Door Paint separation?

I don't recall where i found this one, somewhere on the forum, but this is what I am looking for, this picture is not that great but we can see how the door was painted and the door looks like it might be un touched and original.

if anyone has any better pictures of how the doors were painted please share.

and as was in the first posted link post #1
" The door its self, was the part outside the seal painted to match the body? and the cab color was painted up to the door seal? "

I think to clarify everything from the seal inside would be interior color and everything outside the seal would be body color and based how the door seal and as seen in the picture basically the lower portion of the door on the hinge side would be painted body color, while the rest would be interior color, I also assume that the body color would wrap to the inside some to cover the door edge

if my research and description is incorrect please let me know.

Update post where the door picture came from

Re: 64-66 Door Paint separation?

My 1964 C10 is in original fawn paint. The hinge side of the door looks to be the same as the interior color. The wraparound of the door panel edge looks to be exterior color, but not a definite transition from one color to the other. My disclaimer here is that it is hard to tell on mine as the interior/exterior colors look very similar in this area, but you'd get a more exact answer from someone with a contrasting color truck; OEM4ME, Yelmer, theastronaut will know! It might also depend on what factory painted them? Not sure on that.

This video shows some glimpses of this area that is consistent with what I'm seeing on mine. Have a look a at around the 2:30min and the 13:20 mark.

Respect to you for doing your research on this detail!

Yeah that is a nice truck I have seen that video before but as you mention, it is very hard to see just exactly how the front hinge side of the door is done but you can get some glimpses of it but it is still not enough to know for sure.

Re: 64-66 Door Paint separation?

Note: I see your post is asking for 64-66 doors, but I only have 63 and thought I would share those.

Here are a couple pictures of two sets of doors. The red doors are from my 63 that I am working on. The black doors are from my parts truck which I also believe to be a 63.
Name: Door 1.jpg

Size: 110.8 KB
In this picture you can see the red wraps around the hinge side and looks like it has a hard line up to where the seal would be. I have no idea if it would have been taped or how they would do it, but it looks like a straight line.
Name: Door 2.jpg

Size: 109.6 KB
This picture shows as the red moves up the door and gets to the window area it sort of fades, gets a little over spray, and then becomes all interior color up as you move up the window area. The triangle area for the knee knockers in this example is all body color.
Name: Door 3.jpg

Name: Door 4.jpg

Size: 58.6 KB
These two pictures seem to show that on the black doors, the body color doesn't wrap around past the hinge area. The second picture may show it better. Again, I have no idea if it was taped, but the color doesn't seem to go as far as on the red doors.
Name: Door 5.jpg

This last picture shows further up the door and you can see the triangle area doesn't have the exterior black where my red door does. It also doesn't have any over spray where the window area starts.

So, each set of doors has a little different paint to it. A couple difference between the trucks that I have no idea if it would make a difference in what we are looking at. The black truck was a custom appearance truck. You can see the two tone interior panels. The red one is not. The red truck has a fawn firewall and the black truck has a body color firewall. The black truck didn't have a vin tag, so I am not sure where it was built. My understanding is the assembly plant made the difference in the firewall color, but I have no idea if that would be the same as to how the doors were painted. But these sets of doors are definitely different. I will leave it to the guys that have done more research on original trucks to maybe explain the how and the why.
Hope this helps
Rob

Re: 64-66 Door Paint separation?

Thanks for posting these so some else can see how that was done.
I have heard as well that where the trucks were built made a difference how they were done but not sure if anyone has specifically documented that info.

I hope someone will post some more 64-66 doors.

Pic in post #23 showing this area on an original paint Suburban for reference. Shows external color on the hinge panel.
