Looking for ideas as I don't like the bumper my stepside came with. What looks good?

Re: Stepside rear bumper..what fits/looks good?

I have the Saf-T-Bumper on my '68 C/10 Stepside. Dealer add-on. They are bombproof and handy as an anvil when tinkering on these old beasts. Also give sure footing when getting into the bed.
But now that the average driver is not a worker, but some car-sport enthusiast, I guess they've become unfashionable.
Keeping mine. They look good if you shoot some aluminum spraypaint on them annually.

Re: Stepside rear bumper..what fits/looks good?

I wanted something a little different but not crazy so I built a bumper similar to the one I had on a 70 model stepside as a teenager.

Re: Stepside rear bumper..what fits/looks good?

First picture is using a stepside bumper from a 1st gen S10. The narrower width looks really good on stepside trucks

Second one is using last gen El Camino rear bumper

Elco bumper looks good. Updates the tail lights/Back Up Lights and cleans up the stock 'lollypop' fixtures. [Also I'm partial to Orange Stepsides.]

Re: Stepside rear bumper..what fits/looks good?

I had lunch with my nephews. [One is named Patrick.] They gave me some Guinness Stout themed sox last XMAS, so I wore a yellow pair today. Only green shirt I could find that was clean is a green/navy striped polo shirt. I wore a black fedora to imitate a guitarist we all know. Patrick wore a kelly green derby party hat.

Re: Stepside rear bumper..what fits/looks good?

Thought I had a step bumper that would work but it is a fleetside bumper.

No, this is not listed on the SPID. It only had 4 options, automatic trans, gauges, two tone paint, and radio. I knew it wasn't a factory option, I should have asked if it was the same as would have came from factory. I bought a new 69 truck in the fall of 68, it was an 8ft fleet side, only options on it was gauges, and over size tires. It was Burgundy which I understand is not so common today. Paid $2160.00 out the door for it.

I was going to do a show and tell with it but it looks the same as a couple of other fleetside bumpers guys posted. that was the one on a trailer I have made out of a 7-C 10 I rolled 30 years ago.

The bumper on my 71 could be cut down and not look bad if my uncle hadn't welded that half inch plate on it and If I hadn't added a receiver to it.

Mostly the Step Bumpers with traction surface were dealer add-on items. Often with the Dealer's name. Sourced locally too.
My '68 C/10 Stepside was sold out of Felix Chevrolet in LA and had a Saf-T-Bumper also locally made.
Only on the SPID if they put them on at the factory. [Which happened sometimes.]

Re: Stepside rear bumper..what fits/looks good?

I'm pretty well sure that the dealer installed step bumpers were regionally manufactured and distributed to dealers. Most in the Southwest coming from the Perry Bumper company in Waco who stamped a bunch of them with the dealer name and town. In most parts of the country if the truck was sold new in that area the bumpers came from the same bumper plant. I can remember that in the 60's the Hispanic farm workers often drove pickups with step bumpers from dealers in Laredo TX on them.

As far as stepside bumpers go it is hard to beat the stock sport bumper. I saw this one at the Portland Roadster show yesterday.

Those look pretty good. If I ever had a stepside I would narrow a factory sport bumper and modify outer brackets as needed. Even the factory sport bumpers intended for the stepsides look to wide IMHO. To the OP, factory type sport bumpers are available aftermarket for the step. Still look to wide to me.
