How do you reset odometer on our cluster?

Does anybody know how to reset the odometer back to all zeros?. I have seen them on ebay restored like that.

Most people use a drill hooked to the speedo cable but it's take''s for ever and may be illeagal in your state ????

I tried that trick but I would prolly burn the drill up before I got there,lol. Any other way to do this?

I pulled mine all the way apart to get access to the odometer. When/if you do it this way you will see that each wheel has a small tab that is held in place by a plastic strip. Carefully pull up the strip, it's fragile, and then rotate the wheel individually until you get all zeros. I think you need to work from left to right while holding the other wheels in place. It's a little like a Rubicks cube at first, but it's simple to figure out. I thought about the drill, but decided against it. The speedometer has a spring assembly that goes under tension when spun. I thought a drill might overwind the spring and make the speedometer in accurate, or worse have it zero at 10mph.Reset

Take the speedo out of the housing. Then remove the 2 screws from the front so as to lift the face up slightly. Next carefully pull the black clip out from around post of number wheel. Slide the number wheel to the left and lift it out. Be care full not to break the needle. Some of the newer number wheels have a plastic slotted clip to hold the numbers in order. If yours has it, carefully slide it off. Now rotate the wheels one at a time by the little metal clips until the zeros line up opposit of the little clips. Once you have all zeros, put it back together opposit the way you took it apart. You might look at the numbers thur the face window before you put the last 2 screws in the face to see that you have all zeros not 1's or 9's.

id be real carefull if u did that, it is illegal as stated before for the main reason of if someone buys the vehicle a couple years down the road and there is only a couple thousand miles on it but the whole running gear and everything has been on there for hundreds of thousands of miles u could get in some trouble for that. i would recommend that if u do that i would make sure everything on ur truck is Brand new and i mean everthing that way its basically like buying it off the lot just my 2 cents though

I'm not doing it to sell a truck. People who have rebuilt engines like a cluster reset to track their mileage. The mileage on the title is what matters legally.

Now hold on. Everybody keeps saying how it's illegal. But with a 72 or older it will most likely be in the 100 to 200 thousand range. How would the cop know if he changed it or if he just rolled over fresh again?
I can understand the want to change it to reflect the miles on a new or rebuilt motor.
Also if you are going to sell it just have the milage on the title changed to "exempt". Which is what mine says do to the motor not being original.

it's not illegal....like he said it's just like turning over a new 100 thousand....there is no way to know the TRUE mileage on one of these trucks.

I have one all out of the truck that will be all 0's in 400 miles for 5 dollars that is all good and clean if you do not wish to adjust yours.

In Iowa and Alabam, after the truck/car is over a certain age the mileage is stated as exempt or not applicable anyway. No one is going to think a truck like ours only has 2,000 miles the way most look. You would have to basically renew or rebuild every thing and have a very expensive paint job to make it look like that. Technically, it is illegal but as long as you don't advertise it as a true low mile truck and whomever you sell it to knows its not accurate, its ok.

The only reason that odometer tampering is illegal, is when it is done for profit, and/or fraudulant sale.
The way that you are supposed to do it is to place a sticker in the drivers door jamb stating "Odometer replaced at XX,xxx miles."
Also true, as stated above, over mechanical limits...exempted due to age, or how ever your state words it, the mileage doesn't really matter on an old truck.
As for rolling it back, screw the drill idea. I did it once and I could only get up to 45 or so MPH. Considering I had some 30Kto go, i said screw it.
Inspector722 pretty much listed it right, however, I normally ignore the oposite side from the metal tabs...instead, i line up the 5's with the metal tabs. Then the oposite side is all 0's.
I do this on a reg basis at work when we rebuild the Frit Lay P30 trucks. And since we are doing it for maint. reasons, and not profit from sale...the shop is totally OK. The boss was actually concerned so we had his lawyer look into it.
