Bent hood?
I have a very bad bend in my hood, about half way back towards the edges. Most of the yards around here have hoods with the exact same bend, just not as bad. What causes this and how can it stop it from happening to a brand new hood? Thanks

That'd be caused by a lack of hood spring hinge maintenance... To prevent it, keep your hood spring hinges well oiled. There are also aftermarket hood reinforcement kits you can buy and install.

I've got some metal reinforcements on the underside of the hood, but its just secured into the sheet metal. Doesn't seem to really do anything. Is there a lower tension spring available?

It is the hinges that need oiling. Has very little to do with the springs. The hinges get to were they are hard to close then you pull hard on the hood and then it bends. The braces will help it from getting worse but not fix it.

When the hinges wear out, they start to bind, which can happen regardless of how well they're lubed. The trick is to push the hood towards the cab when closing it to get the hinges moving. Yeah, mine is bent too, compliments of a previous owner.

I think its also in the design of the hood. I read in some other post that the GM engineers designed the hood to crease to protect passengers in a front end collision which makes the hood prone to crease with hinge problems too.

yeah im planning a trip to the salvage yard soon, 2 things im looking for: decent hood and bedsides. From what i've gathered, reproduction pieces, while cheap, are a good deal thinner that OE, which makes them *cheasy*

Take springs off and use a prop rod.

Now, all you guys who bad mouthed the 81+ frontends in another thread are getting paid back. The 81+ frontends don't have this problem.
Although, after saying the above, I really do hate to hear your hood is bending. I don't like to see any of my 73-87 brothers/sisters having problems with their rides and I sure want say anything bad about what they have.
