Does anyone know if there is a space saver Spare Tire out there for that will fot a 73 - 80 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup???

I have a full size spare for my Lowered 78 Short Fleetside. Because my truck is so low, I hit a bump in the road, & ended up tearing the stock tire carrier out from under the truck and drug it and the tire a block or two before I could pull over!! Now I would like to find a smaller Space Saver type tire that will fit my pickup.
Any Ideas???????

could try a very narrow rim and skinny tire, say for like a trailer... i dont know.

I removed my spare back when I lowered the truck & added the roll pan. I found a convenient area for the spare not far from it's original locale. It seems to have fit nicely, with room to spare, in the bed.

most trucks come with full size spares and there arn't many cars out there with a 5x5 bolt pattern like our trucks. the only one that comes to mind is the mid 90's impala ss. they had the same bolt pattern as our trucks but i'm not sure if they have a space saver or full size. i know those shared alot with caprices and road masters, but i'm not 100 % sure if those last 2 cars were 5x5 like the imapla or 5x4.75 like most other gm cars.

I believe it's a 15" wheel with a tire to match the size of the stock 17 and the tire.

I would just stick it in the bed that's what most do.

77-91 GM B-bodies (Caprince, etc.) with heavy duty suspension and station wagons also had 5x5 space saver spares. i've actually got one in my garage if im not mistaken.

'71-'76 GM big cars also had the same bolt pattern. A friend of mine used the spare from his '82 Buick Park Avenue (205/75-15) on his '75 C-10. Looked kinda puny, but it worked. Not all of the '77-up cars used the big bolt pattern though.

Hay why not scrap the GM spare suport and get one off of some of the newer trucks. It has a crank deal under the bed so nothing hangs lower then the tire. My 84 Runner has one and it actually work rather well. It has a hole just below the gate that you stick the jack crank into and crank it up and down. No need to lay in the dirt.

Has anyone done this? I was thinking about tackling something along these lines while I have the frame stripped down. Does anyone know which truck models have this type of spare tire arrangement?

I talked to my friend with the '82 Park Ave. today & he said the Buick originally came with a mini-spare, so you might dig one up at a wrecking yard. Just be sure the bolt circle is right before you buy.

I may end up doing the smaller truck wheel. But since my 78 has a 6 banger and I plan on keeping it in there, I could mount a space saver under the hood!!! Plenty of room in there!!!!!!!

I tried the Newer Crank Up spare mount under the bed and the tire still hangs Way Too Low!!!!!! I have hit all of the local wrecking yards and no luck in finding a space saver!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I guess I am stuck with hauling it in the bed!!!!!!!!!

Since your truck is lowered, here's another area of concern. Will your stock bottle jack work? Mine was dead anyway, but I knew if I blew an airline my truck would be too low to get the stock jack under it.

I bought a scissor jack from an 88-98 GM truck and put it behind the seat. It will go under my truck even with all the air out....

lol yeah my truck ain't lowered yet and i don't have a roll pan, but i should stick my spare in my bed because the sheet of plywood acting as my bed has curled real bad and i got a cinderblock and 2 deterrgent bottles holding it down

My 88' Chevy had it. I'm guessing 88' and up.

the old hemi cudas had a space saver spare. it was just a rim mounted in the trunk.....no tire. lol

umm trucks have beds right?
what is the purpose of having a truck bed and not using it?

seriously alot of the lowered/chopped trucks that i have seen use a tonneau cover and keep the spare on a custom bracket inside the bed either in front or behind the axle. some stand it up right behind the cab in the box, some use a spare tire casing from a full size van, paint it and mount it standing up in the bed usually on the sides...

just a few ideas
