Name that interior noise
Okay I think I have an idea on what it is but I need to ask if anyone can pinpoint it exactly. When I'm driving down the road just after going say a few miles down the road (few being less than 10) I'll hear a squealing creaking inside the cab under and behind the dash. It's only for about 20-30 seconds but it's noisy as hell until it stops.
Now I'm thinking it's something to do with a vent inside the cab because it only happens at different times. When I'm driving at night it doesn't do it as soon. When I'm driving in the day when I first start off in a couple minutes it starts up. I think it has something to do with the temperature outside to activate the vent. Am I thinking right and if so where is it and how to "grease it"?

hmmm just throwing something out there; my aunt's ford taurus makes a whining noise when there's a crosswind because a seal on the vent is bad or something like that. Kinda sounds like that maybe, or maybe not. Just tryin to throw something out for ya.

nasty dirty fan motors can make a helluva racket, sometimes at specific temperatures. i replaced mine and now no sound at all (because the switch in the dash is screwed)

PC- Good idea. It might be that. Doesn't it run when the ignition is on? If so time for a new one and maybe a better one.
SB- I've replaced the speedo cable with a new one with my Autometer gauge swap. Also it doesn't do it only when driving and it's coming from near the middle and passenger side behind the dash.

Brandon,
I bet money it's your fan. They do run on low speed all the time (I think). Even if it didn't, I'm guessing with the air going through the vent, it may start it spinning and when it slows down, the bearing is gone and it squeals like a rat with his tail in a trap.

That's the sound Mike Now does anyone know where I can get one that works better (more CFM) than factory? The one I have is awful.

Well I just replced the blower motor and works same as the other one but no sound so far. I'll drive it later today to see my "friend" and see if we hear it then.

brandon- I bet if you fixed up the HVAC vacuum system, and checked all the door closers and stuff, it would make the fan seem like it works a lot better..
my recommendation- goto the big black ball thing in the engine compartment, which is the vacuum reservoir for the door movers, and unhook the vacuum line that goes from it, to the intake manifold tee.. unhook it at the Tee side, and connect a vacuum pump w/ guage to it and create a vacuum... see if it holds it, i bet it doesnt.. it shouldnt leak down within several minutes. if it DOES- you've found a huge problem in the system.. then you gotta investigate and find out why & where.. with a vacuum in the system, go move the selector to MAX AC, vent, defrost, etc and listen for the doors moving (engine OFF for queitness).. if the system is working correctly you should get a LOT of wind thru the front dash vents on max AC (fan high)... Im willing to bet you dont even have the vacuum line from the engine to the black ball, what with your motor swap and all.. let us know! trust me you'll be amazed at what a difference the working system makes. I'll try that but I do have the ball hooked up. I did have that hooked up and I'll check it later with the gauge. I can hear the doors open up and close as need be. On the amount of not flowing out I don't have the vent "deflectors" in the dash or the bezel right now so I know it's flowing more than it should out the passenger side and also I need to reinstall the lower AC duct as well. Once i have all those that might help out as well

Every man needs "friends" like that.
Of course my wife probably wouldn't agree with me. |
