tilt / telescopic?
Does anybody know of any tilt with telescopic colums without a keyed ignition? I'm thinking maybe a Caddy but not sure. Has anybody done this mod before?

A while back my mother had a '66 Caddy with tilt and telescope, don't think the key was on the column.

So they did make them! The caddy I just got has tilt but not the telescopic so I wasn't sure. Thanks!!

I had a parts car 69 caddy deville and the ignition was on the column. it was a tilt telecope too

On the '66 the way to telesope it was the ring around the center cap would turn to the left to unlock it and you could pull it out or push it in and then turn it back to the right to tighten it. The tilt lever was in the usual place. Could be easily passed over if you didn't know what to look for.

Tilt/Telescopic for Chevy
I have a 1966 Chevy Caprise which is a bucket seat, consol, consol instrument cluster AND tilt /telescopic column, with the key in the dash. We are thinking about building it (have a 1972 402 w/400 turbo), but may end up parting it out. The last one(tilt/telescopic) I saw sell on ebay, went for $350 though.

Some Vette's had them. The key went into the steering column in 1969. According to the Corvette Black Book, they were offered as an option from 1965 thru 1968. They might be hard to find though. Here are the production numbers:
1965...3917 1966...3670 1967...2415 1968...6477 That's more than 15,000 of them, so, there has to be one out there somewhere with your name on it. Good luck to you.

I had a 67 Mustang that had a column that tilted and also turned away based on a vacuum assisted switch. It would swing away to the upper right. It was factory based on the original window sticker.

The previous owner of my stepside put in a tilt/telescopic column and I narrowed it down to the 1978/79 era Caddy or Pontiac era. (had a Pontiac steering wheel but a Caddy key???) It has the key on the column but I've kept the one on the dash. Here's a pic showing the way it looked when I bought it and a pic of how it looks today with a custom wheel.
For a non key type column, you'd have to look for 1968 or older on the cars. I may end up "shaving" off the key and column lever nub eventually but I hardly notice them anymore. Wrap a bandana around it and call it a day. :p

You can use any 1968 GM telescopic column from the tilt part up.. It fits directly onto a factory truck tilt column.. (That way all the lower stuff fits perfectly)
The difficult part is the steering wheel combination that houses the "tele" release lever.. I have found that if you use a corvette steering wheel and release lever it makes it much easier.. but still takes some creative fabrication... I do have one 1968 GM tilt/tele column left.. if your interested $100 takes it |
