Gear Drive ?'s
Is there anybody running a gear drive? How do you like it? Loud or Quiet? I flattened a lobe on my cam this weekend and i figured while it was apart i might try one out. Just looking for some opinions.

i`ve run them for years with no problems. i had the noisey pete jackson. i could`nt really hear it much inside because of the exhaust but when driving around town at slower speeds i heard it a bit. i`m building a motor right now thats using a geardrive. i like them but thats just me.

You will not find anything that will hold timing like a gear drive will, as far as street driving goes I don't understand why not ??? I have the noisy Pete Jackson in mine, It has a definite Whine. If you have stock exhaust, stock engine, I would go with a Double roller timing chain, You'll never have another problem with the chain again.... If you have a warmed up engine, and some throaty exhaust then you'll not really notice the Whine Of the gear drive, You could also go with the quiet Pete Jackson, or one of the other manufactures that build the quiet ones. I have known guys whom have ran the gear drives on the street for years...

No experience with them, but I did read somewhere that the valvetrain wears more quickly because the geardrive tranfers harmonics from the crankshaft.

If you want a set I have a quiet Pete Jackson set for a small block I bought from a guy that he said had about 5,000 miles on it. I was planning on putting it on a fuel injected engine but it is not recommended for engines with knock sensors. I know some people have run them with no problems this way but I don't want to chance it. If you are interested I would sell it for $80 including shipping to the lower 48 states.

I removed mine, went back to the chain. I didn't like the whine, always sounded like I was overrevving. Its a love/hate choice I think. I believe mine is the loud, will be unloading it soon.

im running the edelbrock gear drive its been in there for around 25k miles and havent had one problem with theres no reason you cant run a gear drive on the street the edelbrock is barely noticeable as far as the whine it has gotten quieter over time

Never had one in my truck but Blue_71 has one in his shorty fleetside and we heard it at the Indy meet. It sounds pretty cool, but I imagine if you get a oud one, it could annoy the sh!t out of you

I researched the issue before I put one on my 454. Seems lots of people will tell you it will transfer harmonics but I read from a few people who I would consider very knowledgeable and they said they are no worse than a normal setup. I think it is one of those things where one person reads an opinion then restate and restate till lots of people are dogging on them. Guess I will find out once my 454 is going.

I am running the pete jackson noisey in my 72 with a 350 engine. it sounds ok, not extremely noisey. my friend has one for edelbrock and it sounds like a dry powerstreeing pump. I tend to like them, i was turned on to them by drag boat racers.

We have a couple in motors now and have run them off and on in various motors since I was 17 so thats 25 years of using them and I have never expierenced more wear to the valve train. If you use a noisey drive you will generally hear it at all engine speeds unless using a flowmaster 40 or similar series muffler that resonates exhaust inside vehicle, if you run a quiet gear drive the gear drive whine is generally only noticeable at idle and slow cruising.
