Non-Chevy Power in our 71 C10

Hey Guys/Gals: I dont want to step on anyones toes, but have any of you swapped in a non-chevy powerplant into one of these babes, my son and I have looked at the dozen or so that run around our area and they are basically the same once the hood is popped. We are keeping the 69 C20 in the chevy family, it has a 327 installed and that is staying put. But for the 71 I kinda am leaning towards a 500 Caddy motor, or even a 455 buick, any thoughts or ideas on this....... Please no curses or voodoo placed on my soul

i myself have seen a 455 pontiac in a '67. the guy was using it to tow his race car, said it had all the tourqe he needed!

Thisolechevy........thats what my son keeps hoping will happen to me, we have a 40 over 454 on an engine stand its driving him nuts to see it sitting there and not in the engine bay....LOL

I think there are a few caddy powered rigs on here. And I've heard of 455 installs as well. Personally, if I had all the cash in the world...I'd throw a vintage hillborn injected 426 hemi in one

I have a caddy in one of my trucks. It STILL isn't done, but that is from a major lack of funding...not from the swap being too hard.

Hi, I run a 500 caddy and it is a torque monster that pulls anything with ease
and off the line it surprises v-8 Stangs! The Buick 455 I ran in a 80 vette Body and they have most of the torque of the caddy except with the roller rockers it would still rev up to 7000 rpm's all day at the drags without problems. The caddy is done at 4600! The Buick is a better engine if you wish to haul FAST. The Caddy motor gets better gas mileage than a Chevy 350 due to the fact it hardly has to work. One of the best things about either swap is the dist. is in the front and this makes it easier to work on. The spark plugs are also above the exhaust making putting in new ones a breeze!

This is not non-chevy, but we had a 396 out of a chevelle in a '69, de-badged with real quite mufflers. Used it for a sleeper.

as long as the motor is still a gm product i dont have a care in the world what you put in it, i want to someday put a buick 455 in a truck.

a good buddy of mine put a 500 cad in his 70 chevy and it was awesome. burnouts from hell, would pull anything that would move.ran great stock, torque is king!

Pontiac 400 swaps works well

I am currently putting a 1970 gto 400 into a 63 c10. It is not too bad a swap once you get the right mounts (for pontiacs it's not too bad). I spoke with a guy at the engine shop and one thing that's nice about torque motors is that you dont have to run them hard to do what you want to do (pulling or racing) they have a bottom end that gets you out fast if you can get it to stay on the road.

I know a guy on the oldsmobile boards that bought a set of custom-made Olds engine mounts to fit in a 67-72 chevy truck. It's going in his 71 LWB with a built 468. If you want me to ask about them, tell me. If you could stick an Olds 425 in there, that would be awesome. You know you drive an Oldsmobile when you have a 7 inch long rod.

I've always felt the caddy engine belongs if anything other than Chevy. The old big block ones are high quality pieces than are more truck engines than the car engines that that pass for truck engines.

The guy I bought my 71 cab off of has a 427 in a 72 c-30 and a caddy motor in a 68 C-10.

1981 K30, 350/465/205 dana 60 and dually 14 bolt. Has a G80, and a flat bed. Going to replace the flat bed.

1985 K20, 350/400/208 10 bolt and SF 14 bolt. I wonder where I can find some 1 tons. Hmmmmm

Gentlemen, I appreciate all the interest and response to my post, and as of yet no one has cast an evil spell my way.....I am leaning towards the caddy motor from what I have read about them, so that leaves me with a 40 over 454 with less than 5000 miles on it......what to do, what to do.

While it may never be as unique as a caddy, pontiac, or buick powered version, there is NEVER anything wrong with running what you've got. Especially, when it's a big block.

I'm running a mildly built 500 Caddy. She's got more cam to her and I shift her out at 5600 rpm. With a TH400 and 4.11s I've managed to get down to 14.4 in the quarter-mile on street tires. That's with 320 pounds of concrete in the back to keep the wheels from going up in smoke off the line. I think I might hit 14 even with slicks and headers.



I've since taken that Predator off and installed a 900 Edelbrock, and installed a Jacobs electronic ignition setup. Hmmm. Must be time for new pictures.

The Caddy has the torque and 411's are not needed. 3.07 0r 3.08 would be a better combo and will lower your et's for sure! I ran a Buick 455 in my 80 Vette with 308 stock gears, 7.2 in the 1/8 th mile at 92 mph right off the street. Lose the blocks and go with the slicks, drive fast!!!!

all these ideas sound great! i have looked at caddy motors at the local pull and save, not bad price wise, but then i have to deal with transmission/t-case issues! stupid 4WD anyway! now if someone would drop off a 4x4 OD auto with BOP bolt pattern, i'd be set!

any takers?
