Axle Code - G86 Posi

I was just at the salvage yard and there was a 1970 3/4 ton 2wd with a locking differential. Glove box code is G86. Does this indicate an axle ratio?
I want a posi for my 4 x 4 and want to switch the carrier only. Also, is it worth $150?

Thanks,

Dan

That is a Detroit Locker, not a posi. I would jump on it for $150. Tractech no longer makes them for the Eaton axle. If there was no optional axle ratio listed on the sticker, then it depends on the truck's engine. If it had a 250, 292, or 307, then it will be 4.57 ratio stock, and if it had a 350 it will be 4.11. Good luck.

EDIT: Guess I jumped the gun...if it is a dana 60 rear axle, then it will have a posi...a dana/spicer power lok. if it is the eaton, then what i said above applies.

Axle

Thanks for the replies. It has a small block but not sure what size it is.
There is a sticker on the driver side inside the cab that says sometime about the unit and it was made in Detroit so it is probably a locker. It is the large Eaton axle.

Dan

Looks like I will go and have them torch out the axle tomorrow!

Axle is home

Ok. I went and picked up the axle today and will swap out the carrier tomorrow so I can do some 2 wheel peels. Does anyone know what axle lube weight I should use? Also, seeing as though it is a locker, does it need a friction modifier like a 12 bolt Chevy?

I prefer plain ol 90w for mine, and you do not need anything special for the detroit.
