@#$%&* Crossmember !!!

I'm removing a manual trans cross member and son-of-a biscuit eater those rivets are some tough stuff ! Air chisel, grinder, sawz-all, and it still isn't out of there ! Sure wish I had a large gas powered wrench, (torch ! !)

Maybe a few more hours tommorrow will get it !

Center punch the head and drill out. If you use a big enough drill the head will pop off. Even if it doesn't it makes it easier to chisel off since there will be less material to chisel.

I've got a 16 yr old for rent that worked real well on getting ours out. Comes with an air chisel, ear protection, hammer & punch. You provide the compressor & air lines.

The down side is that it takes him about 2-4 hours for the job, and you have to feed him for that period, which may cost more than your truck.

An angle grinder will grind them down to the frame then either a punch or an air hammer will finish the job.

I guess this is what I have to look forward to. I also have a new 350 sitting on a stand, a new 700R4 in the corner, and the auto crossmember...all waiting to be put in. I'm going to go at it this coming weekend. Wish me luck!!!

You can have mine...if I don't have to destroy it. It's a 3 on the tree tranny mount.

Blue tipped wrench or plasma cutter are the tools of choice. If that isn't available, here's a tip for manual removal. Use a cutoff wheel and make an X on the head of the rivet (cut deep). Then use an air hammer/chisel to cut the head off. Then punch them out. I've found this to be a little easier and definately faster than drilling the head off (I usually miss the center).
