Ordered a custom license plate for the truck

I mived to vegas and the custom name plates ar cheap out here.... I ordered mine and it will be here in a week or so ... It reads: MCMLXXI ....

Did you order it on standard issue plates, the blue plates or the special edition Vegas plates? I am using original blue plates from the early / mid eighties. For those of you that don't live in Nevada. You own the plates, The car does not. So you can you use them on your new car or save them for years in the garage and use them years later. The blue set I have on my 02 2500HD, were my wife's. She got them in the early / mid eighties.

I liked the silver state plates better.. The new centenial plates were twice as much and they only allowed 4 characters for custom.... i stuck with the standard issue... it was $36. for the year if I remember right...

here is one on eGay for $3.00 but you need two ... I like the silver color of the plate, it would go with more paint schemes ...

The silver plates are no longer legal for use. I think the DMV made the illegal in December 02. Also, the plate you have pictured is a souviner plate. Notice the red letters. The original Silver State plates had blue letters. You can still order those plates at the Carson City DMV. They call them souviner plates and cannot be placed on a vehicle. All of the Nevada plates are made at the prison about five miles from my house. They have a massive sign painted on one of the walls of the building that states " Nevada State License Plate Factory". My brother just checked in there....who knows, maybe he will be making your plate.

36 bucks for tags, and you can run old plates....man y'all got it good.

You can run old plates here in Ohio too. But they have to be from the year the car was manufactured. I think it only applies to vehicles that are old enough to be registered as "Historical" though.(25 yrs) It's not a bad deal though, it's a one-time registration and small fee, and it is perminent.......unless you sell the vehicle. You don't have a yearly registration and you only pay the fee once.....

While that is true, the bummer part is that it can't be on a daily driver.
In order to run the dated tags, you have to first register the vehicle as a historical, and get the plates. Then, with more paper work, you can take your dated tags, have the BMV look them over, and then you can install them. You have to have the paper work and the historical tags in the vehicle. Then it can only be driven to and from club events, parades, shows, and for maintnence reasons.
True, ppl get away with it all the time, but we have a 1970 Chrysler 300 parked at the shop becouse our night shift guy lost his license for driving it. He was ticketed for improper registration, then when he went to court, they told him that his insurance was voided becouse he was driving an unlicensed car.

Unless a guy is really being stupid about it..nearly anything can be classified as a "tuning run". You can't use it as a daily driver or to commute to work everyday but how many of us do that with our "fun car/truck" etc.?

Sounds like that guy should have had a better lawyer.

You can get classic vehicle tags in Washington too, but they are for parades, etc. Apparently you can get nailed with a fine if you drive the car too much on the classic tags. Since I'm driving my '72 almost daily, I just went with regular plates. Personalized plates are way too expensive to justify.

oregon sucks. granted that i am running older plates made when my truck was it cost me an arm and a leg by the time i was done. it was a like 6 dollar plate transfer, and an 86 dollar custom plate fee and a 56 dollar tag fee. after i bought the trip permit (to last me till the swap meet) bought the plates and paid all of the fees it ended up costing me 180 bucks but it looks good though

that's not quite that easy Andy, They take some plates away from us every once in a while.. I received a new set of personalized ( I've had my BGBYTOY plates for going on 18 years) plates in the mail last year with a little note. I contacted DMV and was told as of the date of new registration the old ones on my truck were no longer any good and I would be ticketed.. Which was fine with me, They were pretty beat up and if I were to ask for replacements, I would have had to purchase them.

My new ones are what they call the "SUNSET" design.


When we are done with our personal plates they are supposed to be turned in, not hung on the wall for a souvenir.... But then again, it's not my fault one of them fell off or was stolen .....

as far as cost goes, They charge us on the value of the Vehicle, and the age, ( or right back to the value)

Hell we even have to pay the Prisoners for making the damned plates


Here in Nevada we have MANY different styles of Plates to choose from, But each "Special" one has a yearly additional fee, whether or not it's a Personalized.

The plate on Ebay for sale is nothing more then a Souvenir plate you can buy at any of the souvenir stores or Tourist Traps in Nevada.

They don't charge me extra for the blue plates I have. My wife has had them since they were new. I think she got them in '83

It's nice being in Mississippi, very laid back and useful. Antique tags are 25 for life. No driving or other restrictions either. Some day these will be back on the road.
