Crushed Dreams
Ive always knew about old cars and trucks being sent off to be crushed, but recently I went to find something for mine and came home "shocked". I went to find a set of headlight bezels for a 55 - 57 the other day...each junkyard I went to, all the owners said "sorry I did have a bunch but the value of scrap went up and I had them crushed". After going to several places and hearing the same, I finally searched thru a guy's junkyard for about an hour and came across a 1956 Chevrolet school bus that I got my bezels off of. Its always been hard to find stuff for older cars and trucks...but recently everything in my area has been crushed....is it the same with where you guys live?
I remember when my grandpa first got his 59 and starting look for parts. Id ride with him, have a hard time finding parts sometimes but there was still alot of trucks around. Now only a couple years later, seems like they are ALL gone. Kinda makes you sick at your stomach when you hear about somebody crushing a "perfect" (junkyard truck, but with alot of potential) truck just to get a few bucks. They all say "well I wasnt selling any parts off them so I crushed them". Looks like they would sell parts off them very easy since they are getting harder to find.

Around here everything rusts out quicker than you can say "road salt." The only cars the junkyards have around here are from the early 80's on up. The local jy's oldest truck is a '68 Ford F100 short fleet with a 390, and its actually not in that bad of shape (prolly worth some $$). Then they have a stripped '71 C/10 swb (verrrry bad shape). '79 Ford Bronco, 400/C6/NP205, missing front clip and front axle, also very bad shape. Late 70's toy pickup. Then its all ugly 80's cars.
You've got it lucky...i wish there were more old cars and trucks here that i could at least look at. only time somethin like that surfaces is if its been in a garage or barn for 30-40 yrs.

Too often have I seen a truck that has just arived at a junkyard in almost perfect shape...then couple months later it will be worthless. One junkyard here does that alot. He will bring in nice cars, then you come back a month later and its worthless. He will have been pushing it around with the dozer's and skidders.
On the same note: There is a 50 ford 2 door in my area. My grandpa said it has been in the same spot for over 25 years. Said when he first saw it, it was pefect....even the hubcaps still on it shined. We asked the guy last week if he would sell it. He said his "son" didnt want to get rid of it. If they guy thought anything at all of the car it wouldnt have sat in the same spot for 25+ years uncovered. It has grass growing up to the door glasses, and thorn bushes covering the back. Car has been sitting so long id imagine the chassis is rotted away by now.

Rico_bob's right, those people think "some day" but that someday never comes, and the vehicle ends up rotting away or stripped to nothing.

Junk Yard are sometimes the worst!
We have a local "bone-yard" that has had many old cars there for decades... If you try to buy a part from them "the old man" won't sell it ... or if he does think he may sell it to you he wants 20 times what is worth!
There are many 60's era muscle cars over there in that yard ... But they have all rusted to the point that they will be lucky to have enough metal holding 'em together when the crane comes along to load them in to the crusher! Some people just don't get it until it is too late! rico_bob
