Putting in my Sony Head Unit in my 86 GMc 1/2 ton last night, hole was already cut in the dash, so just wired it up and slipped it in. Everything works awesome, except it just flops around in there with nothing supporting it from behind. Any ideas how to fix this?

From what I remember, most mounting kits should have a bracket that attaches to the rear of the head unit that you can secure under the dash. The Pioneer unit I am using has a chassis that is snug enough to where it doesn't flop around. I would suggest Radio Shack or a local shop in your area will probably have something for a couple bucks that you can use. Goodluck.

Mine holds rock solid by just bending the angled tabs that are on the outer case. This is the thing that the stereo slides into. If it was a new stereo it should have came with a back strap. If not you could get one at any stereo store. That should help, but like I said, mine holds solid without it. Good luck

There is a metal support bracket that should be back there. I have an extra one laying around somewhere. If you want it, I can see if I can find it for you. Or you can get one from Crutchfield for about $10, but that would have the bracket and the face plate.

On my Sony I went to Lowes and bought some angle iron and fabricated a tray for it. I made a square slightly bigger than the unit for it to sit on. Then I added a metal strip(not angle iron) from the middle of the rear of the tray angled down and fastened it to the lower part of dash. It is rock solid!!! You could probably go monster truck car jumping and it wouldn't budge.

Otherwise you can do one of the other recommendations here, what ever suits you best. I read somewhere that these trucks are supposed to have a tray for radio already but I guess alot of them get removed over the years.

If I remember correctly think what I did cost me under $10 for materials.

Plumber's tape. Metal banding with holes in it.

is that what that stuff is called, Plumbers tape? I've used that stuff for more things than I can think of, and it works everytime!

Yes, comes in a roll about 6 foot long and is soft but strong. Already has holes in it for mounting.

got the antenna adapter, so i can put it together now

I fabbed up a bracket using aluminum that is only about 1/2" wide and was fairly thick so it was sturdy, just bent the ends to the right angle and drilled holes and screwed one end to the sony HU and one end with a bolt and nut to the bottom of the dash.

its called pipe strap or plumbers strap, available at most any hardware store for cheap

mine just fit in there

Red didn't come with a radio, but my dad had a tape deck in there. There was solid metal behind the dash bezel so all it took was cutting that metal and the radio fit snug.
