Door lock lever clip wtf?

During the tear down last year I removed the door lock arm and that little clip that goes around the round arm and the lever.

So now I'm trying to put it back on. I can't seem to get it back on and its causing me to drink. Do I have to remove the door latch assembly and slip the clip on then remount the latch assembly?

Any suggestions?

clip

Put the clip in the slot on the handle/window crank & then line the handle/window crank up with the shaft on the door & push it on. It automatically seats onto the shaft.

I always attach the door lock rod to the door latch mechanism prior to installing the latch into the door, working the rod up through the hole.

My suggestion would be to remove the latch, install the rod and then reinstall the latch.
