I don't have any way of recording sound. I've been putting off buying a digital camcorder. Maybe one day I'll break down and buy one. Until then, you will have to take my word for it.
It is much quieter. Even my 16 yo son, who never says much about my truck (he's a skateboarder, what do you expect), said it was quiet. He says he liked it better with the Aeros because it was louder. Of course he would. He's a teenager and likes loud noises. I was hunting for a quieter system, I have found it. Don't get me wrong, it is plenty loud if you stand behind the truck. What I like about it is I can now listen to my MP3's and not get headaches. As for going to school to learn how to weld. That's out. I had enough of school when I had to go. I don't want to learn to weld bad enough to go to school to do it. |

He says "I found the problem. somebody snuck in there ant put some POS ford motor in your chevy". He refused to touch that motor ever again LOL. OK sorry for the hyjack. OK Capt KAOS what you got that will fit my 454 Burb that's not so loud? it has 2.5 inch down pipes and the rest of the system is 3 inch after the Y pipe. I honesly wouldn't mind loosing the Y pipe and putting on a X pipe. It's 3/4 ton and I'm emissions exempt but I would like to remove the Y without damage so that if I sell it I can reinstall it and not have a issue with compliance brought up. Just toss the factory system in the rafters for now.

I'm not 100% certain of the era, but ALL Chevrolet built engines were "Chevy Blue" for a period (77-84??). At least every one I've ever worked on, L-6, V-6 or V-8.

They started painting them GM corporate blue when they went to the same small block in all makes, ie, Buick, Chevy, Olds, etc. My 85 came with a 305 of course and was blue. 86's are blue. I'm not sure of the 87 pickups, but the one in my 87 van is blue, so is the 305 in my 92 van.

Do you have any installed pictures? Im wondering how it tucks and the double hump crossmember are. What did you have to have enlarge (cats?) or the system?

This is the only pic I have that shows anything at all. I should have taken some before taking it off the jackstands. It's tough to get any good pics of it with it on the ground since my truck is so low. It tucks real well and you can't even see it from the side of the truck, well except for the tailpipe that is behind the axle and turns out behind the rear tires.
I had to enlarge the adapter pieces it comes with. It comes with 2.5" pipe in front, 2.5" in/out mufflers and 3" tailpipe. They supply two adapter pieces that I gathered were for hooking the mufflers to the tailpipe. The adapters were the exact same size as the muffler outlet on one end and the tailpipe on the other. It could have been welded but no way of slip fitting together.

If I read that right, the adapters needed to be about 1/8 bigger ID in and out to slip over for the mufflers and tailpipes?
I am more than likely getting the pypes system. Does it fit well around the transmission crossmember being a double hump?

Yes, it fits great around the crossmember, although I do have cats which I mounted behind the crossmember for heat reasons. My truck is lowered 4/6 and even the 3" pipes go over the axle real well and fit nice.
You are right on the adapter pieces. I had to enlarge the small (2.5" end) to fit over the 2.5" muffler outlet. I enlarged the 3" tailpipe ends instead of the adapter so all slip fit joints would be going inside the next piece. If you were welding (what I am still planning on doing), it wouldn't matter which end went where. Edit: I meant to add that the x-pipe fits the spaces in the double hump crossmember perfectly. |

Yes, they are only 2" of difference. Kit was designed for headers and was mocked on a 4x2. Wouldn't think you would run into many problems if it was a 4x4 since it goe under everything.

Captkaos, I could swear I posted this in this thread somewheres, but anyways..... Will this system hang from the stock dual-exhaust equipped hangers, or do you have to use those cheesy aftermarket hangers?

Marc,
They come with the cheesy aftermarket hangers. I don't know if you could use the existing ones, Swerve might, but you could weld hangers to the pipe if you wanted I guess.

take it to a local shop, ask them if they can raise it on a lifter or when you go to get it welded, take some pics, i am looking for something like this for my 76GMC

As you can see in the pic above, I have a hanger at the back behind the axle. The hangers up front are on the front end of the muffler and hung from the crossmember piece where the fuel lines and wires go for dual tanks, right at the back of the cab.
